About this event

This online training prepares individuals to understand the importance of creating a Safe Space for LGBTQIA+ students and colleagues. Learn about LGBTQIA+ identities, terminology, and how to make your campus space as safe and welcoming as possible. Participants will receive an official Campus Pride Safe Space certificate with their name upon completion of the full two hour training.

The Campus Pride Safe Space Training Program is a nationally recognized program that provides training and signage for institutions committed to supporting LGBTQIA+ students. A Safe Space Program is one of the measures of a supportive campus on the Campus Pride Index (CampusPrideIndex.org).

LGBTQIA+ people face higher rates of poverty, stigma, and marginalization, which puts them at greater risk for higher rates of hate motivated violence, sexual assault, discrimination and harassment. Nearly a quarter of LGBTQIA+ young people face harassment and discrimination on their campus today, even higher rates for LGBTQIA+ youth of color and trans/nonbinary young people.

For over 20 years, Campus Pride has been the pioneering LGBTQ leader within higher education for LGBTQ inclusivity and safety. The nationally recognized Campus Pride Safe Space training equips participants with the knowledge, awareness, skills to be an advocate/ally and take action to foster a safe space.

Participants will learn and understand key moments in LGBTQ civil rights as well as the State of LGBTQIA+ Equality when it comes to equity and inclusion in the United States. In addition, individuals will better understand terminology and key components to LGBTQIA+ identity. To conclude the training, participants will explore and identify ways to be an advocate and an ally for LGBTQIA+ people and how they can create a Safe Space. Everyone receives a personalized Campus Pride certificate with their name to be visible as a Safe Space.
