This Reading Redhawks session will focus on Climate Justice in the Biden Administration and will feature professors Tanya Hayes, PhD, Heidi Liere, PhD and John Armstrong, PhD from the College of Arts and Sciences at Seattle University.
Want to learn more about climate justice? Interested in what President Biden is doing to tackle climate change? Join the Environmental Studies Program faculty for this panel discussion!
While climate change is a global problem that affects everyone, there are pervasive inequities as people of color and poor communities face disproportionate harm. Climate solutions must address these disparities. What does equitable climate adaption look like? What can be done to make our energy and food systems sustainable and just? What is happening in the global south? The panel will explore these challenges, what President Biden has done so far, and what advocates say needs to happen.
We encourage you to read some or all of these articles to learn more ahead of the event:
Tanya Hayes, PhD
Dr. Hayes holds a joint appointment with the Institute of Public Service and the Environmental Studies program, where she teaches courses in research methods, international environmental policy and sustainable development. Her research examines how international policies for conservation and climate change are implemented in rural and indigenous communities in the Global South and their respective socio-economic and environmental impacts.
Heidi Liere, PhD
Dr. Liere is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies, where she teaches courses in the natural sciences, agroecology and sustainable food systems. Her research investigates the factors that affect biodiversity in human-managed systems and how, in turn, biodiversity helps sustain vital ecosystem services in those systems.
John H. Armstrong, PhD
Dr. Armstrong is an Assistant Professor in Environmental Studies, where he teaches courses including environmental politics, economics, and social justice. His research focuses on energy transitions and examining the most ambitious climate change policies that local governments can enact, including the stakeholders and policymaking processes behind them.
The panel will be moderated by Jessie Dirks (SU, EVST ’19). Jessie is a program instructor with the YMCA Earth Service Corps and co-leader of Seattle U’s Alumni Sustainability Coalition.
