National Violent Death Reporting System (NVDRS) Surveillance Academy

This training course, designed for researchers and others interested in NVDRS data, will provide basic information about the NVDRS Restricted Access Database (RAD) and how its data may be accessed and used for research. The academy will provide practical knowledge about the system.

The NVDRS RAD is a de-identified, multi-state, case-level data set comprised of hundreds of unique variables. The database includes short narratives to describe the circumstances related to violent deaths, including descriptions from law enforcement and medical examiner or coroner investigative reports.

Some of the topics covered at the academy will include NVDRS overview and history, data sources and elements, and how to access and analyze NVDRS RAD data. NVDRS is a useful, actionable resource that can be used by researchers, state and local violence prevention practitioners to inform and guide prevention programs, policies, and practices.

During this course, attendees will learn about several aspects of the system, including:

o overview and history of NVDRS;

o data sources, elements, and collection of data;

o analysis, interpretation, and communication of data;

o how to access the NVDRS RAD database

o how NVDRS data are used to develop, implement and evaluate prevention programs
