Earnings and earnings differences Average gross earnings in April 2023

Wages, salary, earnings, remuneration: there are many different terms for the income that employees receive for providing their labor on the labor market. The gross earnings are the salary agreed with the employer, before deduction of taxes and social security contributions.

The average gross earnings of full-time employees in Germany were €4,323 in April 2023. Individual earnings usually deviate from this average and depend on many factors. These include gender, age and educational qualifications, as well as job-related characteristics such as the level of requirements of the job, occupation or scope of employment. Furthermore, industry, company size and collective bargaining agreements, i.e. company-related characteristics, can also have an impact on salary.

Only a third of employees earn more than the average salary. This means that almost two thirds of employees receive monthly salaries that are lower than the average salary.
