James City County is furloughing 78 part-time workers, according to county administrator Scott Stevens, as the county looks to watch spending with less revenue coming in during the coronavirus.

James City County has furloughed 78 part-time workers in the county’s parks and recreation department effective Wednesday, Stevens wrote in an email. Other temporary workers and on-call part-time employees haven’t been called in to work. There is a hiring freeze in effect.

At this point, Stevens said he hopes to keep all full-time county employees working and their productivity has been monitored to make sure they’re still doing their jobs effectively while working remotely.

“Even with our offices closed to the public, we are working,” Stevens wrote in an email. “Call or email us as (we) are ready to help.”

Williamsburg has not furloughed any employees although some seasonal part-time workers were never hired, according to city manager Andrew Trivette.

York County administrator Neil Morgan said he implemented a hiring freeze more than a week ago.
