The CUNY Innovative Teaching Academy, established in 2020, aims to improve pedagogy at scale and recognize excellence and innovation in teaching by CUNY faculty. The Academy is predicated on the recognition that the quality of pedagogy and access to high-impact practices has a direct and measurable impact on the quantity and quality of degrees produced by CUNY and the ability of CUNY graduates to be well-positioned for meaningful careers and further study.

The CUNY Innovative Teaching Academy (CITA) is now offering Seminars – longer, more in-depth examinations of special topics in teaching and pedagogy. Seminars typically last from several days to several weeks and are offered between semesters. Learn more about CITA Seminars.

The CUNY Teaching and Learning Conference is a celebration of teaching excellence and a commitment to creating a thriving academic community. The conference aims to foster inter-campus collaborations and mentoring relationships related to teaching that will enhance the learning experience for our students. Additionally, the conference aims to cultivate a culture of professional growth at all stages of development and a stronger sense of belonging among CUNY faculty participants. The inaugural conference will be held on March 22, 2024. Learn more about the CUNY Teaching and Learning Conference.

Curricular Development workshops will assist you with ideas for how to develop or improve your academic offerings. They provide you with practical information for navigating CUNY policies, as well as New York State Education Department regulations and guidance in creating and modifying your academic degree and certificate programs. Our first offering in this area was a program entitled “4+1 Bachelor’s/Master’s Program Policies: A pipeline to time and cost-effective graduate degrees for CUNY undergraduates” (link to materials).

In partnership with the CUNY Office of Student Inclusion Initiatives and Disability Programs, the Office of Faculty Affairs is offering faculty training and development on Disability & Accessibility during the 2023-2024 academic year. This initiative started in Fall, 2023, with a 3-part series about 1) disability rights in education, 2) New York State IT policy and your class, and 3) best practices for teaching students with disabilities. Based on attendee feedback, in Spring 2023, we are offering in-depth collaborative workshops on Universal Design for Learning (UDL) and Accessibility Office Hours to provide additional support. Learn more about the disability and accessibility series and register.

Learning mindsets is a series of workshops led by the University of Virginia’s Motivate Lab, focused on three learning mindsets or Mindset GPS: Growth Mindset, Purpose and Relevance, and Sense of Belonging. Read more about Learning Mindsets workshops.

The New Faculty Initiative (NFI) advances CUNY’s ongoing efforts to be a student-centered, equity-driven university. Recognizing that faculty are the most important influence in a student’s academic journey – and thanks to a significant investment from NYS – CUNY hired almost 600 new full-time faculty between 2022 and 2023. All faculty, regardless of their expertise and career stage, do their best work when they are supported and regularly participate in professional development. The NFI was established to support these new CUNY colleagues and provide a forum for them to interact with and learn from each other. Read more about the NFI program.

Teaching Matters is a monthly, free, one-hour summit of CUNY faculty and staff devoted to sharing innovative teaching strategies and student-centered learning methods. Each gathering includes a focused, interactive and engaged peer-to-peer workshop, and a few practical teaching tips that can be used in any classroom. Learn more about upcoming Teaching Matters events.

The Innovative Teaching Academy offers many programs to help faculty learn about best practices in teaching online and pedagogy. This includes our Online Teaching Essentials (OTE) course, which is an asynchronous, peer-facilitated workshop designed to prepare CUNY faculty for teaching online classes. We also offer other workshops to teach faculty strategies for engaging students in online and hybrid teaching and learning environments.
