CHEFA Funds Statewide Effort to Support COVID 19 Response-Provides $3M in Assistance to Healthcare, Education, Childcare and Cultural Organizations Throughout Connecticut

HARTFORD, CT -- The Connecticut Health and Educational Facilities Authority (CHEFA) Board of Directors awarded $3M in grants as part of the newly established FY 2021 CHEFA COVID-19 Grant Program.

Jeanette W. Weldon, CHEFA Executive Director stated, “Many Connecticut residents are suffering as a result of the COVID crisis.  These CHEFA grants will help fund critical supports and initiatives and will have impact throughout the state. We are pleased that the CHEFA Board chose to redirect our philanthropic dollars to meet this need.”

The FY 2021 CHEFA COVID-19 Grant Program will provide funding for statewide efforts to aid Connecticut communities and residents in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. CHEFA is one of a few major philanthropic entities providing funds statewide to assist Connecticut nonprofit organizations or public educational units with major program or capital expenditures in response to the COVID-19 crisis.

Betty Sugerman Weintraub, CHEFA Grant Program Manager stated, “In response to these unprecedented times, CHEFA has shown its leadership by replacing all of its typical FY 2021 grant programs with a COVID-19 Grant Program. The $3 Million dollars awarded by the board will support significant efforts addressing the effects of the pandemic”.

The FY 2021 CHEFA COVID-19 Grant Program will support COVID-19 related initiatives in all eight counties throughout Connecticut as well as organizations in the four CHEFA priority areas of healthcare, education, childcare and cultural. While the state begins to reopen, this critical funding will help important organizations and institutions build their capacity to respond to the new challenges posed by the pandemic, now and in the future.

The Connecticut Health and Education Facilities Authority (CHEFA) is a quasi-public organization that provides access to tax-exempt financing, grants and other financial assistance to educational institutions, healthcare providers, childcare providers and other qualifying 501(c)(3) organizations. CHEFA has issued over $21.3B in bonds since 1965 and awarded more than $38M in grants since 2002. CHEFA is a self-supporting entity; receiving no state funds or taxpayer dollars.

  • The 4-CT Fund: To Support the 4-CT Card Initiative, An Effort Administered through Community Based Organizations and Community Health Centers to Provide Emergency Funds to the CT Undocumented Population - $304,200
     
  • Boys & Girls Club of CT: To Support Summer/Fall Youth Programming with Increased Safety Protocols,  Staffing, and Support for Families - $300,000
     
  • Community Health Center Association of CT: To Support Increased COVID-19 Testing at Federally Qualified Health Centers throughout Connecticut, Acquire Additional Medical Equipment, and Provide Patient Care Kits - $486,000
     
  • Connecticut State Colleges and Universities (CSCU): To Support a Student Relief Fund for Undocumented Students Attending CT State Colleges and Universities - $350,000
     
  • Connecticut After School Network: To Support After School Programs throughout CT with Programming, PPE, and Health/Educational Resources - $220,000
     
  • Connecticut Association for Community Action, Inc.: To Modify Existing Facilities to Implement Social Distancing Protocols and Acquire PPE - $99,000
     
  • Connecticut Early Childhood Funder Collaborative: To Support the Public-Private Partnership with the Office of Early Childhood, Focused on Family Childcare Provider Resources and Technical Support During COVID-19 Crisis - $150,000
     
  • Connecticut Humanities: Partnership with the CT Office of the Arts to Provide Support to Arts and Cultural Organizations Affected by the COVID-19 Crisis - $100,000
     
  • Gaylord Hospital: To Acquire UV Cleaning Machine and Glide Scope Intubation Equipment for Support of COVID-19 Patients - $40,800
     
  • Hartford HealthCare: To Support Ten COVID-19 Mobile Testing Sites in Five CT Regions with Testing Supplies, PPE, and Staffing - $400,000
     
  • Hospital for Special Care: To Purchase Two Ventilators, Pulse Oximeters and Other Medical and Technology Equipment to Care for COVID-19 Patients; to Enhance Community Supports, Virtual Visitation, and Create Autism Video Series in Response to COVID-19 Crisis - $75,000
     
  • Oak Hill (Connecticut Institute for the Blind): To Support Health, Education and Physical Education Programs for Individuals with  Disabilities and  a Food Coordination Program for Group Homes, Due to COVID-19 Closures and Lack of Access - $75,000
     
  • Trinity Health of New England: To Support Stage II Convalescent Plasma Therapy Clinical Trial for COVID-19 patients - $250,000
     
  • United Way, Inc.: To Support the CT United Ways COVID-19 Response Fund Providing Emergency Support to CT Individuals and Families - $150,000
