“Chinese State Capitalism: Diagnosis and Prognosis” Report Launch

How should China’s economy be described? Is it capitalism, state capitalism, socialism, command and control, or something else altogether? More than four decades after the post-Mao Zedong leadership launched their economic reforms, the precise nature of the country’s economy and the political orientation of the institutions that govern it remain subject to debate. In March 2021, the CSIS Freeman Chair in China Studies and Trustee Chair in Chinese Business and Economics convened some of the world’s leading experts on China’s political and economic system for a two-day workshop to discuss these pressing questions, incorporating their analysis and perspectives into a newly released CSIS report, Chinese State Capitalism: Diagnosis and Prognosis.

The discussion will feature report contributors Claire Reade of Arnold & Porter and Daniel Crosby of King & Spalding, and Lingling Wei of the Wall Street Journal. Report editors Freeman Chair Jude Blanchette and Trustee Chair Scott Kennedy will co-host and moderate the discussion.
