Would-be car thief shoots at woman in Glastonbury driveway, police say. Similar shots-fired incident happened in Simsbury

A woman who called out to would-be car thieves in her Glastonbury driveway before dawn Friday narrowly missed being shot, police said.

“The rounds struck the front door area of the home where the resident was standing” but she was not injured, Lt. Corey Davis said. The two young suspects left in a dark getaway car being driven by a third person.

The shots-fired incident happened shortly before 3 a.m. on Talcott Road. A resident got up to use the bathroom and noticed an unfamiliar car in front of her house. She then saw two youths in dark clothes approach her car and called out to them, Davis said.

One of them fired shots in response, he said. The youths got into the car that was parked in the street and it took off.

The shots-fired incident is similar to driveway confrontations with would-be thieves in Simsbury this week and in Chester in March.

In Simsbury Monday, a resident of Firetown Road saw two vehicles stopped at the end of the driveway about 1:15 a.m. A stranger walked up the driveway and tried to get into the resident’s car, police said.

The resident ran after the would-be thief, who fled toward the stopped vehicles. The resident then heard what was thought to be fireworks thrown to put a scare into the homeowner.

It wasn’t until two days later that the resident found a bullet hole in the tailgate of a pickup truck and realized at least one shot had been fired.

In Chester on March 28, a man was shot at while youths were in his driveway, apparently trying to get into a car. He, too, was uninjured.

Residents should never confront car thieves — who often are armed, Davis said. Rather, they should stay in the house and call police with a description of the suspects and vehicle.

“Call 911 immediately,” he said.

Any Glastonbury residents who saw something that made them suspicious or who have surveillance video that may help identify the suspects or their car are asked to call Officer John Barrett at 860-652-4268.
