Center for Learning and Development at Vibrant Emotional Health

Vibrant Emotional Health, funded by the New York Community Trust, has been granted the opportunity to build a network of community trainers. The Center for Learning and Development is a branch within their greater non-profit organization that provides training and education to individuals and organizations in order to build a society in which emotional wellness can be a reality for everyone. They will be building a consortium of organizations to provide the Circle of Security Parenting (COSP) across the 5 boroughs.

Purpose:
The purpose of this project is to build the capacity of child- and family-serving nonprofit organizations to provide Circle of Security training for parents/caregivers of young children aged 0-5 years. This evidence-based training is demonstrated to support strong relationships between parents/caregivers and their children, which in turn contributes to healthy early childhood development and improved emotional regulation and well-being among the children. This intervention effectively teaches caregivers the practical fundamentals of building healthy relationships with their children aged 0-5. The research literature further demonstrates that COS supports the development of healthy emotional regulation in infants and toddlers and reduces the risk of mental health concerns as children mature into their school-age years.

Overview:
The COSP program is a manualized, video-based program divided into eight chapters during which trained facilitators reflect with caregivers about promoting secure attachment. The program is designed to be delivered in groups but can also be delivered to individual caregivers or couples in 8 to 10 sessions. The facilitator pauses the video at designated moments and asks participants reflective questions from the manual. Key concepts are presented with visuals compiled into a caregiver workbook; together the videos, the handouts/workbook, and the facilitator’s presence and curiosity assist caregivers in exploring their strengths and struggles in meeting their children’s attachment needs. Each participating organization will be asked to complete at least 8 COSP classes, averaging 1 class per quarter of the two-year grant period.

Target Population:
Groups of caregivers (parents, foster/adoptive parents, and early learning providers) of infants, toddlers, and children younger than 6 years old; can be used universally or in a targeted fashion by serving high-risk populations such as teen moms, foster parents, parents who have recently immigrated to the U.S., or parents with irritable babies.

Facilitator’s Training:
Each facilitator has the option of being trained at their chosen pace. Options to do a one-week training or a two-week asynchronous & synchronous training; 25-35 hours in total.
