Morton Grove Days won’t be returning this Independence Day weekend, but organizers have announced plans for a smaller, but similar festival in September.

Called “Morton Grove Labor Days,” the special event will take place over Labor Day weekend on Saturday, Sept. 4 and Sunday, Sept. 5 at the Morton Grove Civic Center, 6140 W. Dempster St., said Morton Grove Village Administrator Ralph Czerwinski.

Hours are 4:30 to 11 p.m. on Sept. 4 and 4:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Sept. 5.

Plans call for live entertainment (which is still to be determined), a beer garden, food and activities for children, Czerwinski said.

The event will conclude with fireworks on the night of Sept. 5.

“It’s Morton Grove Days without the parade and without the carnival,” Czerwinski explained.

In April, the volunteer-lead Morton Grove Days Commission decided to postpone the 2021 Morton Grove Days, which takes place over four days each July, due to uncertainties at the time regarding the pandemic and whether it would be safe to hold the festival, which draws large crowds to the Civic Center and Harrer Park each year.

The commission agreed to meet again in June, which is when plans for the September festival began taking form.

September’s event is a “joint effort” between the Morton Grove Days Commission, the Morton Grove Park District and the village, said Czerwinski and Bill Grear, a commission member and village trustee.

“I’m thrilled we can do something,” Grear said. “I still feel bad we couldn’t do a Morton Grove Days in July, but I’m happy we’ve got something going (in September).”

Revenue from past Morton Grove Days events will help to fund the Labor Days fest, but the commission is still looking for donations and sponsorships, Grear said.
