Officials behind a proposed multifamily apartment building on Green Bay Road in Glencoe have apparently dropped their plans after the village’s Zoning Commission recommended that the project be denied.

On Oct. 14, the village announced the developers withdrew their application for the envisioned six-unit apartment building at 538 Green Bay Road that was set to go before the Village Board this month.

This developer’s decision followed the Zoning Commission formally voting Oct. 4 to recommend a denial of the project after a nearly six-hour meeting in September where the commissioners indicated they could not support the idea.

The current building owner, Steve McGuire, requested a change in the existing zoning regulations from single family to multifamily with a corresponding special use permit allowing for the construction of the new building.

However, a group of neighbors strenuously objected to the plan fearing the impact to the greater area and the building’s three-story height.

Barney Gallagher was one of many residents who spoke out against the proposal.

“The neighbors are gratified that our efforts have led to the withdrawal of the application for rezoning. It was a lot of work for us all but the outcome makes it worthwhile,” Gallagher wrote in a text.

Christopher Canning, an attorney representing McGuire, did not return repeated requests for comment.

The village said the current process is now concluded as there are no longer any proposals for the site.

After the meeting, Village President Howard Roin said overall he believes there is a need for this type of housing in the village.

“This is a very difficult problem for Glencoe as we would like more multifamily housing available but there aren’t many places to put it,” Roin said.

Roin believes the village’s Plan Commission will eventually examine the greater subject.
