Chicago Tribune
PUBLISHED: | UPDATED:

The opinion pages of the Chicago Tribune are a platform for dialogue, diverse views and commentary from both ends of the political spectrum. The opinions expressed do not necessarily reflect the views of the newspaper or its newsroom. The section operates independently of the newsroom. The pieces chosen for publication are meant to arouse interest, provoke thought and encourage discussion.

Types of content on opinion pages

Letters to the editor

The Chicago Tribune publishes letters and emails from readers reflecting their thoughts and reactions to news of the day and Tribune content. Letters solely reflect the views of the authors and not necessarily the Chicago Tribune.

Submit a letter, of no more than 400 words, to the editor here or email letters@chicagotribune.com.

Op-ed

The Chicago Tribune opinion section publishes op-eds (the term originates from their placement in print opposite the editorial page) from readers and experts about specific issues of the day. Op-eds reflect the views of the writer and not necessarily the Chicago Tribune.

Column

The Chicago Tribune publishes a variety of opinion columnists. Columns are opinion content that reflect solely the views of the writers. Some columnists are members of the Chicago Tribune’s staff. Some are from outside the Tribune, locally and nationally, who write regularly on a subject area or for a wire service.

Editorial

Editorials reflect the views of the Chicago Tribune Editorial Board and are written by Editorial Board members. The editorial board operates independently of the newsroom.
