2022 CAP Public Service Award

Established in Honor of Frank C. Coleman

Originally established in 1989 as the Frank C. Coleman Award for Public Service, this award honors the memory and work of the sixth president of the College of American Pathologists (CAP). In 2006, the name of the award was changed to the CAP Public Service Award Established in Honor of Frank C. Coleman. The award is given to a CAP Fellow who best exemplifies the political, citizenship, and leadership qualities of the late Dr. Coleman and is the highest honor for outstanding accomplishments and dedication to political and civic life and to public service in the US. The CAP presents this award when merited, not necessarily on an annual basis.

Gregary Bocsi, DO, FCAP

The College of American Pathologists presents Gregary Bocsi, DO, FCAP, with the CAP Public Service Award in recognition of his service to pathologists and patients by being a leader of our profession in many areas.

Most recently, Dr. Bocsi has been a leader in the CAP’s Quality Performance Measure Development process through the Quality and Clinical Data Registry Affairs Committee (QCDR). He was a member of the Economic Affairs Committee (EAC) dating back to 2015, and he transitioned to the new Quality/QCDR Committee when that group spun off from the EAC due to the expanding roles of the QCDR.

In 2015, as a member of the EAC, he joined the Measures and Performance Assessment Subcommittee. He quickly distinguished himself as a leader by participating in the development of metrics for Medicare's Quality Payment Program. While on the EAC, he served as a liaison with the CAP’s Quality Center for Evidence-Based Guidelines on its advisory panel for MMR/MSI Testing in Patients Checkpoint Inhibitor Guideline. He has further contributed as a member of the expert panels for the Laboratory Detection and Initial Diagnosis of Monoclonal Gammopathies and the Amyloidosis Diagnosis and Typing guidelines.

Based on Dr. Bocsi's excellent service to the CAP, he was selected as a charter member of the Quality and Clinical Data Registry Affairs Committee and was chosen to be vice chair for its Measures Portfolio, formalizing his leadership in the CAP measurement development process.

Dr. Bocsi is active nationally, helping to ensure that the CAP is recognized as the leader in development of pathology measures of quality. He is serving a second term as the pathology representative to the National Quality Forum Cancer Committee. In addition, he was the lead author in a 2020 publication in Archives of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine entitled "Developing Pathology Measures for the Quality Payment Program - Part 1: A Quest for Meaningful Measures."

Dr. Bocsi is active in the education of future physicians and pathologists as a lecturer in pathology, cardiovascular, endocrine, renal, and clinical laboratory medicine courses at the University of Colorado School of Medicine and regularly presents lectures for pathology residents. He also directs the clinical chemistry rotation at the University of Colorado pathology residency program and is an attending on the molecular pathology service. He is active in governance at the University of Colorado School of Medicine where he is faculty senate president. He recently co-chaired the Molecular Laboratory Information System Selection Committee and is a member of the Pathology Finance Committee.

Dr. Bocsi was well-prepared for a leadership role in medicine. He received an Air Force ROTC scholarship while attending Carnegie Mellon University as an undergraduate. He subsequently served in the 108th Air Refueling Wing of the New Jersey Air National Guard and attained the rank of captain. He was an information technology consultant for industry and an associate programmer analyst at the Goldman Sachs Group in New York. He now serves as laboratory director at multiple UCHealth system laboratories.

Dr. Bocsi is the associate director of the University of Colorado Hospital Clinical Laboratory and an associate professor at the University of Colorado School of Medicine Department of Pathology.
