BTS blew up the Billboard Hot 100 this week when their English-language single “Dynamite” hit No. 1 (chart dated Sept. 5). And in an exclusive interview with Billboard, the boys couldn’t contain their excitement.
RM yells, “This is my tombstone! We’ll take it to this grave!” as J-Hope screams and shows off their top Hot 100 spot from his phone. Considering it’s also the first time a Korean group has ever topped the chart, Jin assures they’re not feeling pressured to outperform their explosive song.
“Of course, we’re very excited if our songs and albums do well, but that’s not necessarily a goal that we set,” he says. “What’s most important to us is that our fans listen to and enjoy our music. That alone makes us happy enough.”
With the disco-pop flare behind “Dynamite,” Jimin teased their next album will blend a variety of genres. “I think we can safely say that the next album will contain a lot of songs that will satisfy the varying tastes of our fans,” he tells Billboard. “Please look forward to it. There are a lot of great tracks.”
But Jungkook was in for an extra treat this week after celebrating his 23rd birthday Tuesday (Sept. 1), a day after the news of BTS’ career-first No. 1 song broke.
“I’ve had the best birthday. It’s unbelievable,” the belated-birthday boy exclaims. “I’ve heard such great news and had amazing support from our fans on exactly September 1st. I had events, fireworks, there was also one involving a train. … Hearing news like that, I’ve had a really enjoyable day enjoying a glass of champagne each with our members, having a great day.”
The slick-footed septet brought their own fireworks for their 2020 MTV Video Music Awards debut performance of “Dynamite” on Sunday (Aug. 30). And with various NYC backdrops making them feel and look closer to the central action of the awards show, Suga revealed how the heavy rainfall in Korea made them change plans on the fly.
“We were actually unable to go ahead with our initial stage plans due to a lot of rain here in Korea. So we changed things and proceeded with an alternative option, but luckily we were still able to adhere to our initial ideas of connecting Seoul and New York. I think it turned out great,” he said.
