The University of Missouri - St. Louis says the number of first-time students enrolling this year is up 10%. Recruiters told KMOX's Carol Daniel that they have a deeper mission than just getting students to enroll.

Reggie Hill, UMSL's Vice Chancellor for Strategic Enrollment, said that in the past, students applied to three colleges or universities and likely picked a state school. Now, they usually apply to six or seven, and schools have to compete to convince students and families to choose them.

However, Hill said he has a larger mission focused on the demographics of the area.

"We have to figure out how to import more students into St. Louis who will graduate from our institutions and also live, work, and grow families here," Hill said. "And that is how we contribute to the revitalization of this city."

UMSL is increasing its international enrollment with ten students from the Bahamas. That number is expected to double next year.
