Purpose and Mission

The Advisory Committee on Apprenticeship (ACA) provides advice and recommendations to the Secretary of Labor on ways to better utilize the apprenticeship training model in order to provide equitable career pathways that advance the dignity of work for everyone, and emphasize four strategic areas: 

  1. The modernization of the Registered Apprenticeship model and the promotion of innovation across the National Apprenticeship system;    
  2. The expansion and diversification of apprenticeships into new industries and sectors including, but not limited to, cybersecurity, clean energy, advanced manufacturing, information technology, and healthcare;   
  3. The establishment of apprenticeship pathways, inclusive of pre-apprenticeship and youth apprenticeship, that promote career pathways to good jobs with family sustaining wages; and   
  4. Equitable access for all workers to participate and succeed in the National Apprenticeship system.

Membership

The ACA is composed of approximately 30 members with balanced representation of employers, labor organizations, and members of the public.  Members come from a cross-section of those directly affected, interested, and qualified as appropriate to the nature and functions of the ACA. The diversity in such membership includes, but is not limited to, race, gender, disability, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Representatives from the U.S. Departments of Commerce, Education, Energy, Health and Human Services, Housing and Urban Development, Transportation, and the Office of Personnel Management will serve as ex officio members.  The Assistant Secretary of Labor for ETA will also serve as an ex officio member. The current membership will serve for two years from their date of appointment.
