What a refreshing start to 2021! As we all continue to cope with the "ups and downs" that life throws at us, Clay Drinko's "Play Your Way Sane" had me LOL'ing! His book is loaded with personality and wit. This quick and easy read has given me a light at the end of the tunnel and really put me into the mind of the author. Mr. Drinko and I must share the same brain as many of the improvisational games I already apply to my everyday life. One of my favorite lessons, "Shut up and Listen" stopped me in my tracks. His tips and tricks helped me reflect on how I'm communicating with others and in contrast recognizing how others are communicating with me--what vibes am I giving off? and what's exceptible behavior I receive from others?! This soft back book makes it easy to keep around and reinvestigate a chapter or lesson at my leisure. The perfect gift for those that need a splash of humor and a dash of improvisational wisdom. Happy playing! 5 stars!!

Play Your Way Sane is a quick and easy read, AND the kind of book I want to keep coming back to. I have tried lots of approaches to coping with anxiety and being more present and grounded in the moment--meditation, deep breathing, etc., which are nice tools but not always helpful to me as I tend to overthinkt.

These games, however, are just the thing! It's fun to flip to a random page and challenge myself to try that game as I navigate my day, and it's also helpful to be a little more thoughtful about what I feel like I need (More genuine connection with others? Getting out of my head? Being less concerned with what I look like or what impression I might be making and more joyful in the moment?) and to find a game to try that aligns with that need. Great book, really creative approaches, and a super fresh take on mindfulness and presence. Yay!

I'll be completely honest, I haven't read a self-improvement book since my early 20's, though thats not to say I haven't needed them! I was instantly attracted to the cover of Clay Drinko's "Play Your Way Sane." And yes, I know they say not to judge a book by its cover but I'm a visual artist so those types of things have value to me! And as an artist I am constantly in my head, feeling anxious and very self-critical. This book came into my life at just the right time! The intro suggests skipping around to different sections and games and I did just that! It's funny, insightful, easy to read and honestly opened my mind to new ways of thinking about myself and the world around me. I highly recommend this book to anyone looking to do the same!

Play Your Way Sane by Clay Drinko is the perfect mix of smart and sassy!. It is fun to read, and Clay’s candor and openness make the games relatable and easy to apply in everyday life. ,
The timing of this entertaining book is perfect!!! I am inspired to create my own silly stories and games to help me get through my life without blood pressure spikes and jail time!
Read it. Pass it on. Buy it for a friend. Use it as a coaster. Seriously, you will love this book.
PS I actually had to play a couple of the games to write this review, because I was totally overthinking it….like I was trying to win a Pulitzer Prize or some sh!t…..

It's such a fun read. But more than that, it's thoughtful and treats the reader as an equal--unlike many books designed to improve our lives. The games are so easy to implement. It's not about improving your life by changing everything--it's about dealing with the life you already live. I never thought of myself as a particularly anxious person, but these games are keeping me focused and grounded at work, at home, and out in the world. I've already gifted it to two other people. It's been 16 years since I've read a book that I turned around and gifted to multiple friends and family members.

This book was around 3.5 stars for me.

This book is full of "games" that help you get through life. Most of them come across more like "hacks" or other ways to stay in the moment, be more observant, or even remember people's names. Some of them seem really helpful and creative. Some don't feel particularly relevant. It seems kind of like a fake it until you make it book that helps you learn skills.

There's a variety of games the author presents to help people navigate life, or very specific social situations.

I had some hesitations when I first heard about this book, but wow was I overthinking it - within just a few pages I was laughing and relating.. I was hooked. Drinko has provided me with a playful guide to getting out of my head and into the moment with family and friends. It’s a very quick and very easy read, but his tips and tricks have really stuck with me and I’ve found myself using them more often than I had imagined.
I just needed to play.

Within a few paragraphs, I was belly laughing. Within a few pages, I had learned new techniques to help manage anxiety and improve my daily life. Clay Drinko has a knack for helping people identify their anxiety (and maybe get a laugh in) while teaching research-backed improv exercises to alleviate its intensity in the moment. His vulnerability and wit make it an enjoyable read. I will be recommending this book to my patients who struggle with anxiety. Loved it!
