The Melissa Yandell Smith Library supports A.C.T. and Bay Area artists by providing access to the information they need for their work in the conservatory and theater.

30 Grant Branch

Our browsing location is located on the 8th Floor of 30 Grant and contains two thousand plays and music scores, as well as computers to search the entire collection. Items not available at 30 Grant Ave. may be requested from the 345 Mason collection.

Drama Online Library
A.C.T. library members have access to select collections in the Drama Online Library, including play scripts, videos, audio, and books. Please contact library@act-sf.org for login credentials.

345 Mason (Toni Rembe Theatre) Collection 

The full library collection is available by appointment and contains nearly 15,000 titles, including play scripts, books, videos, language and music recordings, music scores, and theater periodicals. To schedule an appointment to access the full collection, email library@act-sf.org.

Circulation Policies

Who Can Borrow

The Melissa Y. Smith Library is open to:

  • All A.C.T. staff, students, and visiting artists
  • Drama teachers in the San Francisco Unified School District
  • Theatre Bay Area Individual Premium members (including Student members) and Company members

If you would like to request access for your organization, please email library@act-sf.org.

Loan Periods
Items are due two weeks after checkout and are eligible for renewal if no one else has placed a hold on them. Eligible items will automatically renew for another two-week period, up to three times. Library users receive automated email notices for due dates and renewals.

Fees
We do not charge overdue fines. Fees for lost or damaged items may be charged, up to a maximum of $30.

Donation Guidelines

The library accepts donations of theater-related books in excellent condition. Before donating, please check our online catalog to ensure that we do not already hold the title in our collection. Duplicate copies of highly popular or classic titles are acceptable. To donate, please email library@act-sf.org with the approximate number of items you wish to donate and your preferred drop-off date and time.

Melissa Yandell Smith

A.C.T.’s library is named by generous support from the Melissa Yandell Smith Legacy Fund, which was established to honor longtime Conservatory Director Melissa Smith. The Melissa Yandell Smith Legacy Fund supports A.C.T. and provides additional support for the Conservatory students and program that were her life’s work.

Volunteer Opportunities

The A.C.T. performing arts library contains more than 8,500 plays, periodicals, and theater-related publications. Volunteer duties include checking out and shelving books, answering student inquiries, and other special projects. For more information, email library@act-sf.org.
