PARIS — Richard Buckley, editor in chief of Vogue Hommes International since 1999, has resigned from the magazine he made synonymous with smart, themed issues and controversial fashion shoots depicting men in lipstick, cavorting with prostitutes or locked behind bars.
Buckley said he plans to move to Los Angeles and start a small publishing house.
Bruno Danto, who had been Buckley’s number two for the past two issues, will assume the top slot, said Didier Suberbielle, president of Condé Nast France, which publishes Vogue Hommes twice a year.
Danto, 35, joined the Vogue Hommes team two years ago. Previously, the journalism graduate had contributed to such publications as Infomatin and worked as a freelance creative director doing advertising campaigns for clients including Givenchy cosmetics.
Buckley, an American, has been a fashion journalist for more than 25 years, contributing to titles such as Dutch, House and Garden and Mirabella. He previously was the European editor for Fairchild Publication’s Daily News Record, based in Paris, and subsequently was Eye editor of Women’s Wear Daily in New York.
Buckley, who is the partner of Tom Ford, has lived in Europe for the last decade, based in Paris and London covering the international fashion scene from those cities.
Suberbielle said he regrets Buckley’s departure, but said Danto is fully qualified to maintain the title’s momentum. Vogue Hommes, with a circulation of 60,000, closed 2004 with advertising revenues up 8 percent, he added.
Vogue Hommes, like WWD, is part of Advance Publications Inc.
