Calls for Lt. Gov. Fairfax's resignation continue after second accuser comes forward

RICHMOND, Va. (WSET) -- Another woman has come forward accusing Virginia Lieutenant Governor Justin Fairfax of sexual assault and rape.

The attorneys for Meredith Watson are requesting the resignation of Fairfax after they claimed he raped her while they were both students at Duke University in 2000.

"Mr. Fairfax’s attack was premeditated and aggressive," their statement read. "The two were friends but never dated or had any romantic relationship."

Nancy Erika Smith, Watson's attorney, said Watson told her friends about the rape in a series of emails and Facebook messages that are now in their possession.

Additionally, they said they have statements from former classmates corroborating that Watson immediately told friends that Fairfax had raped her.

"The details of Ms. Watson’s attack are similar to those described by Dr. Vanessa Tyson," Smith wrote in an email.

Dr. Tyson said she met Fairfax on July 26, 2004 when they were working at the Democratic National Convention and after the two went to his hotel room, she said he forced her to do oral sex on him.

Watson's attorneys said she is reluctantly coming forward out of strong sense of civic duty and her belief that those serving, or looking to serve, in public office should be of the highest character.

"She has no interest in becoming a media personality or reliving the trauma that has greatly affected her life," they said. "Similarly, she is not seeking any financial damages."

Her attorneys said they have notified Fairfax through his attorneys and they hope he will resign.

Fairfax said he denies that latest allegation against him.

"I deny this latest unsubstantiated allegation. It is demonstrably false. I have never forced myself on anyone ever.

I demand a full investigation into these unsubstantiated and false allegations. Such an investigation will confirm my account because I am telling the truth.

I will clear my good name and I have nothing to hide. I have passed two full field background checks by the FBI and run for office in two highly contested elections with nothing like this being raised before.

It is obvious that a vicious and coordinated smear campaign is being orchestrated against me."

Lt. Gov. Fairfax also released a statement Wednesday morning denying Tyson's sexual assault allegations against him.

In his statement, Fairfax wrote that it happened 15 years ago, when he was an unmarried law student. He said he had a 'consensual encounter' with the woman who made the allegation.

The Republican Party of Virginia has also called for Fairfax's resignation in a statement.

This is the second serious sexual assault allegation leveled against the Lieutenant Governor in the past week. As with with Dr. Tyson's allegation, it needs to be investigated thoroughly because it impacts his ability to continue to serve the Commonwealth.

Former Virginia Governor Terry McAuliffe joined in as well, issuing a statement calling for Fairfax to resign.

Virginia Delegate Patrick Hope tweeted out his plan around 6:30 p.m. February 8 if Fairfax doesn't resign by Monday.

Senate Republican leaders released a statement that echoes the Republican Party of Virginia, saying an immediate investigation needs to take place.

For the second time this week, Lieutenant Governor Fairfax has been accused of actions that, if true, constitute major felonies in the Commonwealth of Virginia. We are shocked and dismayed by these credible and serious allegations. These accusations necessitate comprehensive, thorough, and immediate investigations by law enforcement authorities in Massachusetts and North Carolina.

Fairfax has hired the same firm that represented Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh during his hearing about an alleged sexual assault.

Dr. Tyson has hired the same law firm used by Kavanaugh's accuser Katz, Marshall and Banks.
