In honour of Truth and Reconciliation, WCE Calgary presented Two-Eyed Seeing, a conversation with Deanna Burgart, sponsored by Introba. Two-Eyed Seeing is a concept introduced by Albert Marshall a Mi’kmaq Elder from Eskasoni First Nation which promotes infusing your engineering practice with a greater understanding of, and appreciation for Indigenous worldviews.

Deanna Burgart is a distinguished speaker, Indigeneer, business owner, and Schulich School of Engineering’s first Indigenous Engineer in Residence from 2018-2019 at the University of Calgary. Deanna is currently a Teaching Chair at the University of Calgary focused on weaving Indigenous knowledge and perspectives in engineering. Deanna shared her inspiring journey as a woman in consulting engineering embracing her Indigenous heritage.

Deanna discussed infusing Indigenous ways of knowing, doing, and connecting with engineering practices to create projects that are both innovative and culturally attuned. Attendees gained fresh insights into the intricate bond between technology, society, and Indigenous communities, and explored the art of respectful consultation with Indigenous groups and engineering projects.
