San Diego Pure Water Program Featured in WIRED Pure Water San Diego was showcased as an example of how cities are preparing for water stress and diversifying their local water supplies. In August, U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) Administrator Michael S. Regan announced a new $120 million Water Infrastructure Finance and Innovation Act loan to support the project. This comes as Phase 1 construction for the City of San Diego’s Pure Water Program is underway, with the first project, the North City Pure Water Facility and Pump Station, kicking off in April of this year. This ambitious project aims to provide more than 40% of San Diego’s water supply by 2035 using advanced water purification. Read more. Partnership Announced to Recycle Water, Improve Colorado River Sustainability The Metropolitan Water District (MWD) is partnering with the Central Arizona Project and the Arizona Department of Water Resources to advance the development of a Regional Recycled Water Program. Under this proposed program, communities across multiple states will partner to develop a massive water recycling program in Southern California that would in turn increase the availability of Colorado River water to other states. This partnership mirrors a similar agreement with the MWD and Southern Nevada Water Authority signed earlier this year. Read more. East County Advanced Water Purification Releases Virtual Tour A new 360-degree virtual tour of the East County Advanced Water Purification Program provides a guided tour of facilities that will create new, local, sustainable, and drought-resilient drinking water supplies for East San Diego County. Viewers who have a virtual reality headset for cell phones can take engagement one step further by “stepping into” the video. The project is a collaborative effort between Padre Dam Municipal Water District, the City of El Cajon, the County of San Diego and Helix Water District. Watch the Tour. Valley Water Announces Plans for Water Purification Facility To better adapt to drought conditions and avoid future water supply uncertainty, Valley Water announced a plan to open a water purification facility by 2028. This facility will be developed in collaboration with the Cities of San Jose, Mountain View, and Palo Alto. The new facility will produce 10 million gallons a day of purified drinking water to recharge groundwater aquifers. Read more. Recycled Water Used for Green Hydrogen Production Plug Power announced its new plant in Fresno County, CA will produce green hydrogen using solar energy and recycled water. Traditionally, hydrogen is stripped from natural gas, releasing carbon dioxide. Green hydrogen is produced without direct carbon emissions but requires substantial amounts of clean water. A new tertiary treatment plant in Mendota will provide recycled water for use in the green hydrogen plant as well as for use by residents. Read more. |
