Raleigh Section Updates

Thanks to you, <<First Name>>, the Raleigh Section is Thriving!
Over the past year we have created opportunities for in person lunch gatherings, evening socials and monthly (virtual) education programs. Our section is has enjoyed
connecting with colleagues at our Lumen & Lunch and  Lumen & Lagar seeing familiar faces and meeting new members as they joined the section!
We are grateful for our Southeast regional colleagues from Charlotte, Winston-Salem, and as far as Richmond VA who joined us for various programs throughout the year!

We boast an elite group of lighting superstars in our section; what larger sections wish they had, we have local! The success over the past year would not been possible without the dedication & hard work of all our volunteers!

Teamwork makes the dream work!

We always are looking for volunteers and invite you to join us! You can give an hour a month, or an hour a week, whatever works best for you schedule. Be part of our upcoming mentorship group, education committee, planing group and more. We're always looking for fresh, creative ideas!

Member Spotlight

This issue's member spotlight is on Turquoise Shaw!
When did you first hear about the IES and what prompted you to join?
I first heard about IES from my college professor Dr Helms, he taught lighting and electrical distribution at North Carolina A & T State University. As a class, we would go to the local Greensboro chapter IES meetings. My initial reason for going was to receive extra credit on some projects but I quickly found joy in being around other lighting professionals and started networking during my college years.
At what point in your career did you come to understand lighting was the career path for you?
By my junior year of college, I knew I wanted to go in the lighting career path it's always been a passion of mine and I enjoy what I get to do every single day. Helping people reduce their energy consumption by switching their old inefficient light fixtures to new efficient LED fixtures.
What is the best thing about the Society? Why do you continue to renew?
The best part about being a part of the society is being around like-minded people just as enthused as I am about lighting. The opportunity to network and learn about new products that are on the market. Lighting technology and design criteria is constantly changing and evolving so that's my main reason for continuously renewing my membership to stay up to date. And I think the IES does a great job of doing that.

When not serving the advancement of the art and science of lighting, how do you like to spend your free time?
I enjoy traveling with friends and family and I love to explore new cultures and new places. I enjoy biking swimming and running. Hiking through nature and camping... anything outdoors.

Project Feature

First Presbyterian Church

Project submitted by Hartranft Lighting Design (Diane Rodriguez)
Client: First Presbyterian Church
Project Description: National  National Register of Historic Places First Presbyterian Church, Charlotte undertook a 16-month renovation of the 1895 Sanctuary and 1947 Welcome Center. Lighting played an important role in the successful transformation of these spaces.
Name at least one unique challenge associated with this project? FPC had specific requests for the lighting design:
  • Enhance lighting quality with an appealing aesthetic
  • Increase lighting levels in sanctuary
  • Specify luminaires to enhance televised worship services
  • Limit new sanctuary lighting to existing openings in historic ceiling
  • Sanctuary lighting controls with preprogrammed scenes encompass morning, evening, Tenebrae, and concert uses
What factors contributed to the success of this project? Improved general lighting employs discreet sources and allows historic decorative chandeliers and sconces to create sparkle and unique character. New aimable cylinders provide general lighting significantly increasing lighting levels, crucial for reading hymnals and bulletins. Accent lighting at chancel renders officiant shadow free. Retrofit LED lamps dim to zero in historic chandeliers ensuring various scenes, long lamp life and minimized maintenance. Interior historic stained-glass window (to the side of the chancel) is backlit with tunable white LED up / down wall washers.

Design ensures Sanctuary control flexibility with individually addressed DMX luminaires. Several preset scenes are programmed for variety of sanctuary uses. Interior stained-glass window backlighting tied to an exterior / roof-mounted sensor follows change of Kelvin throughout the day to match exterior-lit windows.
