LEDucation had over 7,000 preregistered attendees and over 380 exhibitors and 26 in person session. In my humble opinion, people are ready to get back together! Thanks to our colleagues at IESNYC for sponsoring the sessions! The show floor was jam packed for two days with manufacturers and OEMs, architects, lighting designers, specifiers, energy managers, electrical engineers and more! It was so great to see everyone in person again. LightFair registrations are now open! Add LighFair to your calendar for May 23-25, 2023 (conference runs May 21-25).

Topic: Webinar | Lighting 101: Basics of Circadian Lighting

Join us THURSDAY (note this is a day change from our usual Friday webinars) for a LIVE webinar featuring Andrea Wilkerson, Senior Lighting Research Engineer at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory.
Andrea will discuss terms commonly used in the lighting industry such as circadian lighting and melanopic lighting and associated metrics. Key research results to keep in mind when designing lighting for more than visual responses will be presented, along some recent simulation-based research and field research results.

When did you first hear about the IES and what prompted you to join? I heard about the IES first when I got into product marketing at Philips Lighting (now Signify) in New Jersey. I had been working in lighting for a few years already, but with a new product focused role I was excited to learn more about the science and history of lighting.
At what point in your career did you come to understand lighting was the career path for you?
I think once I got into product management it really became clear that I was falling for lighting. I realized that I would walk into buildings and stare at the ceiling, trying (like most other IES members) to figure out what type of lighting was being used and if it was our Alto green end cap lamps. The story behind sustainability and the impact that I could have on putting less waste into the world really resonated with me. After that it was moving from traditional to LED technology and that did it for me- light + technology, I was sold!
What is the best thing about the Society? Why do you continue to renew?
Honestly, it’s the relationships I’ve made within the organization and what I’ve learned from these other light lovers. Attending the IES conferences has been the most educational trade shows and the most fun as well. I really learned a lot of circadian and human health and light from the top scientists and professional in the industry at these conferences. People in the industry like researcher Dr. Mariana Figueiro, lighting innovator Gary Trott, and lighting designer Brienne Wilcox have really inspired me to think differently about innovation around light and health.
Past/Recent Projects
The project I’m most proud of was launching the daylighting experience called the Cadiant Dynamic Skylight. The program took over two years of research from our R&D team, as well as lots of voice of customer from the specification community with early prototypes and working to understand how we could give people the connection to nature that we all desire so much. The result was an amazing daylighting solution that looked like a real skylight and through connected technology could actually be programmed to move the sun across the day. It was an inspiring project to be a part of with a great team coming together to deliver an amazing innovation.
When not serving the advancement of the art and science of lighting, how do you like to spend your free time?
I love spending time playing basketball with my kids and playing tennis with my wife. Honestly, any way to connect with nature whether that’s a round of golf or enjoying some rays at an outdoor brewery, I’m in!

Project Description: Durham, North Carolina Project Size: 5,500 SF
Durham is known for an industrial urban fabric borne out of its textile and tobacco origins. Amidst rapid growth in the Triangle, Durham’s ethos has been to retain and repurpose the fabric of its industrial past for an emerging creative community. The transformation of 401 Foster draws upon this mission by repurposing a 1930’s-era auto shop into EVOKE studio. Selective demolition removed subdividing partitions to create a centralized open space. This open space forms the communal hub of the studio around which collaborative and supporting program elements are organized. In addition, the connected studio space celebrates the building’s bowstring steel trusses, exposed wood ceilings, and concrete floors.

Name at least one unique challenge associated with this project?
One challenge was the low ceilings in the meeting areas, a second was staying in budget. To complement, rather than compete with, the beautiful rawness of these elements, new interventions and lighting are placed in the Hub space which reflects and embraces the hands-on nature of the building’s history.
What factors contributed to the success of this project?
Collaboration with architect and lighting representative was a big part of the success of this project. Up-light color changing LED brings texture of wood ceiling to warmth nature and historical perspective of the space. Direct-indirect pendant lights are used in the open space. A beautiful transition from pendant to recessed vertical mounting on the wall is installed at a particular location. Each insertion is strategically placed and reflects the studio’s material and fabrication explorations which combine both computer aided technology and traditional craftsmanship techniques. Arrival, gallery and conference areas take advantage of the now-glazed garage door openings along the street allowing for community engagement of the studio’s design process to reinforce and cultivate Durham’s vibrancy for innovation. Lighting in these spaces is designed to reduce glare and contrast. An art gallery is supplemented with track lighting to finesse gallery pieces and work drawings crafted in the studio.
