Tonight's Networking and Shared Leadership Meeting

February 13,
6:00 - 7:00 pm (Eastern)

You Don't Look Sick!  A Personal Perspective on the Invisible People with Mental Disabilities

maryam
Maryam Husamudeen, our APS User Support Specialist, shares her perspective in trying to support others by giving the support she was not receiving for herself because she was living with an "invisible" disability. ('You Don't Look Sick!)

People have stereotypes about what mental disabilities look like. But when things like abuse happen "behind closed doors," those who appear to 'have it all together' may actually be the ones in most need of support.

There are many reasons people don't talk about what's happening: fear, shame, not wanting to burden others, or just not having  people who feel safe to talk to. All of these things can cause people to suffer in silence. But nobody deserves to live in fear or shame.

Maryam will share some of her personal story and then lead a discussion that invites those with related experiences with "feeling invisible" or issues that they have a hard time talking about and the effects those have on their wellbeing.
