We invite applications from candidates who have earned their doctorate in economics, quantitative public policy, or a closely related field by the start date of the position. We have a special interest in policy-relevant research related to climate risk, climate adaptation, climate mitigation, the economic geography of climate, and climate equity.

The successful candidate will demonstrate the ability to produce highly influential scholarship related to the economics of climate change and climate policy. The successful candidate will have the desire and ability to connect research across disciplines and engage with external partners including policymakers, business leaders, and community groups. The successful candidate must have the desire and ability to effectively teach courses on economics, research methods, public policy, and/or leadership at the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MPP) levels and a desire and ability to contribute to the Batten mission through service. The successful candidate will be committed to promoting diversity, equity, and inclusion.

Built upon the strong foundation of one of the nation’s top public universities, the Batten School combines rigorous training in policy analysis with a unique emphasis on the acquisition of leadership skills. The Batten School currently offers an MPP degree and an undergraduate major and minor in public policy and leadership, as well as multiple dual degree programs with other UVA units.

The Batten School is a dynamic cross-disciplinary school offering highly competitive teaching loads, salaries, and research support. The Batten School is committed to faculty growth and is conducting multiple searches this year. While the primary appointment is in the Batten School, a joint/courtesy appointment could be possible in the Department of Economics or other UVA schools and departments, depending on the candidate’s interests and qualifications.

In 2022, the University of Virginia launched a multi-year Grand Challenge Research Initiative in Environmental Resilience and Sustainability, with a focus on climate solutions. The University will invest $60 million in two areas: research on clean energy pathways and research and translation to help local communities develop best practices for responding to climate change. In addition to substantial research support, the University will hire over 15 faculty across six schools. The $10 million Climate Collaborative, led by the UVA Environmental Resilience Institute, will support large, interdisciplinary research teams in specific localities dealing with climate-related challenges. University teams will work with external partners, including policymakers, business leaders, local citizens, community groups and officials, to co-create climate adaptation and mitigation strategies that are based on cutting edge research and are actionable. Successful candidates are expected to engage with the Climate Collaborative initiative and will have access to resources to support research and training.

Applications must be received by November 18, 2022 to receive full consideration, after which applications will be considered on a rolling basis.
