Becoming a social worker, psychiatrist, or any type mental health professional is expensive. School is costly and can require taking on debt. Mandatory internships are often unpaid. Obtaining (and maintaining) licensing is costly. All this adds up to a lack of representation. We're looking to rebalance the budget. After speaking with dozens of folks at every level and stage of the mental health field, we’ve come up with some ideas to create pathways for people from diverse backgrounds to bank on these professions: https://bit.ly/4batmnu

Demand for mental health services is reaching crisis levels across the country. BIPOC youth are among the most impacted. As The Door - A Center of Alternatives's Kelsey Louie writes in NYN Media, youth of color face higher behavioral health needs but less access to care. These barriers can be traced to "stigma, cultural differences, intimidating practices, and lack of validation", which is compounded by "a shortage of culturally competent practitioners in the field". We've been digging into why this shortage exists. By speaking with social workers, nonprofit leaders, students, credible messengers, and other mental health stakeholders, we've uncovered why these barriers exist, the impact they have, and how we can open up pathways for people of all backgrounds to support the mental health of their communities: https://bit.ly/4batmnu https://bit.ly/3UCVES0

NEW REPORT: We spoke with dozens of folks at all levels in the mental health fields about the lack of BIPOC in the industry. From their stories & other data, we have recommendations for schools, jobs & others to level the playing field.   These include:   🌱 Creating a continuum of exposure opportunities for future BIPOC helping professionals.   📚 Developing more inclusive curricula and approaches at learning institutions.   🤝 Providing mentorship and interpersonal support during degree programs, internships, placement, and in securing and advancing in permanent positions   🔖 Helping students prepare for placement and licensure exams   📈 Building pathways for non-clinical professionals seeking employment in the helping professions   ...and much more. For young folks with system involvement, targeted training to position them for jobs in this high-growth field is key to reaching their dreams - and ensuring they avoid further system involvement. For 10 years, DRIVE CHANGE, INC. has worked with restaurants across the city to help young folks gain industry skills such as a Food Handler's License and work-readiness training, as well connecting them to reentry support. The model works - and has landed participants jobs at world-renowned restaurants like Gramercy Tavern.
