Patricia Abbott, PhD, RN, FAAN, FACMI is a formally trained informatician and is currently working with the Washtenaw County Health Department in Michigan as part of the Covid-19 response efforts. Dr. Abbott is also an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Information (where she teaches Health Informatics) at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor.

From September 2012 until June of 2020, she was a tenured Associate Professor and Director of the Hillman Program in Nursing Innovation at the University of Michigan. Prior to her move to Michigan in 2012, she was an Associate Professor at the Johns Hopkins Schools of Nursing and Medicine (2002-2012), where she was the Director of the PAHO/WHO Collaborating Center for Knowledge Management. She is an internationally known informatics educator and researcher.

Dr. Abbott completed a 2-year post-doctoral NIH funded research fellowship in the Department of Computer Science in the Human Computer Interaction Laboratory (HCIL) at the University of Maryland College Park where she focused upon the design of usable and error-mitigating Health Information Technology (HIT). Dr. Abbott extended her research background in knowledge discovery in large datasets (data analytics) at the HCIL by also focusing upon data visualization, human computer interaction, and user-centered design. This interest has expanded into the use of GIS and publicly available data to visualize at-risk populations and deepening the understanding of what resources must be mobilized to improve health conditions.
