We haven’t seen the last of Aziraphale and Crowley.
Good Omens — which was initially conceived as a limited series — has been renewed for Season 2, Amazon Prime announced Tuesday. Michael Sheen and David Tennant will reprise their respective roles as the angel Aziraphale and demon Crowley in six new episodes, which will begin filming in Scotland later this year.
Per Amazon, the second season “will explore storylines that go beyond the original source material to illuminate the uncanny friendship between Aziraphale, a fussy angel and rare book dealer, and the fast-living demon Crowley. Having been on Earth since The Beginning and with the Apocalypse thwarted, Aziraphale and Crowley are getting back to easy living amongst mortals in London’s Soho when an unexpected messenger presents a surprising mystery.”
Neil Gaiman will continue to serve as executive producer and co-showrun along with fellow EP Douglas Mackinnon, who will also return to direct. Rob Wilkins, John Finnemore and BBC Studios Productions’ Head of Comedy Josh Cole will also executive-produce, while Finnemore will serve as co-writer alongside Gaiman.
“It’s 31 years since Good Omens was published, which means it’s 32 years since Terry Pratchett and I lay in our respective beds in a Seattle hotel room at a World Fantasy Convention, and plotted the sequel,” Gaiman said in a statement. “I got to use bits of the sequel in Good Omens — that’s where our angels came from. Terry’s not here any longer, but when he was, we had talked about what we wanted to do with Good Omens, and where the story went next. And now, thanks to BBC Studios and Amazon, I get to take it there.
“I have enlisted some wonderful collaborators, and John Finnemore has come on board to carry the torch with me,” the statement continues. “There are so many questions people have asked about what happened next (and also, what happened before) to our favorite Angel and Demon. Here are the answers you’ve been hoping for. We are back in Soho, and all through time and space, solving a mystery, which starts with an angel wandering through Soho, with no memory.”
Added Sheen, “Personally I’m against it, but the world isn’t going to just save itself, is it? If David and I can manage to not fall out too badly this time it may even have a chance of getting finished.”
Tennant also chimed in, saying that “the return of Good Omens is great news for me, personally. As I get to work with Michael again, and I get to say Neil’s wonderful words once more. It’s probably less good for the universe as it almost certainly means there will be some fresh existential threat to its existence to deal with, but, you know – swings and roundabouts…”
The first season of Good Omens was released on Amazon Prime in May 2019 and was based on the beloved 1990 novel Good Omens: The Nice and Accurate Prophecies of Agnes Nutter, Witch, by Pratchett and Gaiman. In addition to Sheen and Tennant, the Season 1 ensemble included Jon Hamm, Nick Offerman, Jack Whitehall, Miranda Richardson, Adria Arjona, Michael McKean, Anna Maxwell Martin and Mireille Enos.
TVLine’s Streaming Scorecard has been updated to reflect Good Omens‘ surprise renewal. Are you looking forward to another season?
Wow… that took a long minute. Well after the release of S1.
I thought it was renewed a long time ago. There was talk about doing more episodes if they came up with a really good idea.
There could have been scheduling issues. Martin Sheen was just freed up by the cancellation of Prodigal Son.
Well that is a pleasant surprise. Can’t wait.
I’m so excited about another season. For some reason I thought it was a limited run series show. So this is great news!!!!! I love Michael Sheen and David Tennant. Good news for a change…..as opposed to them taking off some of my favorites!
I think it was supposed to be that… but I guess the viewership was high enough to press Gaiman for a S2 I’m almost positive I read he said he wouldn’t do S2 because it was a limited… but I can’t remember where I read it!!
I couldn’t get into this show.
Same here. I really love Sheen and Tennant, so I figured it would be a natural for me. I started it 3 different times and ended up just walking away.
Just skip all the parts focusing on the kids and concentrate the demon and the angel.
Yeah. I was disappointed with the show.
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hooray!!!
Wow. I thought the original series was self contained. The thought that there could be more episodes of the Ineffable Husbands brings me more joy than I can properly express!! I have no doubt that the writing and production will live up to season 1 (considering they’re the same team) and the acting between MS & DT bring Aziraphale & Crowley so close to my heart. ❤️
Great news! This is a little concerning, though:
“…will explore storylines that go beyond the original source material…”
I mean, it would kinda have to, wouldn’t it? But one of the creators of said original source material is involved, and will be using stuff talked about with the other creator of said original source material.
How could it not? They did the original source material in season 1.
Gotta think that the massive success of STAGED had more than a little to do with this decision. Which is fine by me!
As Gaiman will be involved, Amazon can count me in.
Hooray! John Finnemore is a great comedy writer and his radio programmes are a staple whenever I go on a long car/train journey. If they do a proper job with season 2 we could potentially get even more.
John Finnemore! I missed the name my fist read through. I LOVE his writing. I didn’t think I could be more excited for this. I was wrong!
EW.. no… I found it extremely boring… But, good for them.
Remember that unhinged Christian group that demanded Netflix cancel the series… even though it aired on Amazon Prime?
.
I sure hope Hulu has their response ready! 😄
They must be related to the people who kept commenting on the announcement of ABC’s Rebel that they were going to launch a boycott CBS for ending it and the ones currently going on about how supposedly Netflix is responsible for NBC’s cancelling of Manifest claiming it’s proof Netflix is anti-God!
I saw people yesterday claim their boycott of Ben and Jerry ice cream is working because B&J haven’t been tweeting and sales were down.
Ben and Jerry was the number 1 ice cream of 2020. haha
This is wonderful unexpected news. The first run was absolutely delightful. I really look forward to more from these two.
This is wonderful news!! I loved the first Season of Good Omens but really did not expect a Season 2 for a number of reasons–the book was a true labor of love co-written with Terry Pratchett and the ending was self-contained and,in the past,Gaiman never expressed a desire to do a sequel.Gaiman played this very close to the vest—he’s very active on SM (currently filming Sandman) and even seemed to shoot down the idea of a Good Omens 2 in a recent answer to a fan who asked about the rumors.NG in charge with MS and DT already reprising their roles?I’m in!!
The twitter exchange that seemed to indicate Neil Gaiman denied a Good Omens 2 was going forward took place on June 10 2021–Gaiman re-posted a tweet from a fan quoting from a “report” that stated it not only had been approved but the filming was set to begin in Africa.Gaiman simply answered “No”.Fact–The filming is actually set to begin in Scotland so he did not outright lie. Yesterday (June 29,2021) Gaiman explained about his decisions in a piece entitled “Really Bloody Excellent Omens” and stated “we’ve been keeping it secret for a long time” because otherwise his SM would be non-stop flooded with questions before he was ready to make the announcement.
I am sure Michael Scheen’s open scheduled helped, but this makes me soo happy! I loved season one, and it left me wanting more. can’t wait for this.
On the contrary, I imagine it involved threading the needle because he’s so busy! He’s doing “Under Milk Wood” at London’s National Theatre until the end of July.
I’m sure the fact that Prodical Son got cancelled helped free Sheen’s schedule. To those that said they couldn’t get into this I didn’t like it at first either but really liked it by the end.
I know everybody’s tastes differ so I shouldn’t be surprised by ppl who note that “they couldn’t get into the series”, but I’m not even a sci-fi fan & I found that the combo of the writing & the chemistry between the actors made Good Omens one of the best treats I’ve discovered in years. I’d place it up there w BBC Sherlock & I can not even tell you how very much I loved that srs, Benedict Cumberbatch & Andrew Scott as Moriarty. To each his own, but this small forum board is the first time I’ve ever seen negative commentary written about the show [except for the boycott ppl,].
Lemme tell you right now that Good Omens is, and was never, a sci-fi show. Its a religious show.
Only if you decide to see it that way. Viewing is subjective — including opinions & ways of dIscerning what is being shown onscreen. For ex., to me, the Good Omens series appeared to be a sci-fi romcom. While I happen to be Jewish, I didn’t take the religious aspects of the series too seriously, other than the overall message that there can be good and evil found in both Heaven and Hell when they are taken to extremes.
And that is part of the general theme of Good Omens, since Aziraphale & Crowley identify NOT so much w either Heaven or Hell but mainly with humanity, after living amongst them for 6000 yrs. Ppl almost always end up having different views on shows, concerts, novels, et al. Part of what continues to make America a great country is our ability to both recognize that and allow for such different opinions, without censure or overt distaste.
Lastly, I consider it in poor taste to simply state outright what one believes without adding that it’s an opinion rather than fact. For ex., it’s a fact that Good Omens was lifted directly from the original book. It’s opinion as to what the series represented to each person who watched it.
Funny, I never thought of it as a religious show or a sci if show. It I had to pick a genre I would go with fantasy. This is only my opinion and like you said….everyone sees things in a different way, in their own way. (Thank the Good Omen Gods Above….cuz if we were all the same, life would be boring.)
Frankly, I don’t care what genre it falls under. I just absolutely loved the actors and the characters they played. So looking forward to another season.
Actually, fantasy sounds more appropriate. A fantasy romcom. IMPO. And, like you said, the label isn’t nearly as important as the joy & pleasure the series gave me overall!! I am thrilled that they came up w a new, fresh storyline for a season 2!
This makes me very happy!!!
love the book and series. Never thought it would have sequel, but if Gaiman is involved, I’m sure he knows what he’s doing and season 2 will be great.
I will take this news happily since I just finished bingeing both seasons of Staged a couple of days ago. Heck, I’ll even take this in lieu of a Staged season 3.
In an ideal world, I could get both, but I’m not going to get my hopes up.
Tennant and Sheen have a natural chemistry and they’re both incredibly charismatic to boot. It’s a definite watch for moi !
Yay!
Best news of the month!looking forward to seeing my favorites again!
gaiman was adamant that this was a one season show. guess amazon threw enough money at him?
Read the piece Neil Gaiman just posted June 29 2021-entitled “Really Bloody Excellent Omens”–he goes into the history of Good Omens and the decision process to go forward with Good Omens 2.
I completely agree G Winchester. Well said.
Unexpected (as thought to be a limited series) but fabulous news… Tennant & Sheen were irresistible, often hilarious, to watch doing their godly/ungodly things… I guess this happening is one silverlining after the sad demise of the Prodigal Son since it has freed up Michael Sheen to be more angelic and less serial killer…
