The Senator McCoy Scholarship

“When I first came home and started to work on building the Tribe’s resources, one of those resources was getting our Tribal members educated. Getting them educated was very important so that we could build on our resources and help our people grow,” –State Senator John McCoy (Tulalip)

Created in 2020 after his retirement, the Senator John McCoy Scholarship was established to support the next wave of Native leaders in Washington and honor his legacy of public service and education advocacy.  The scholarship supports students enrolled in the Masters of Public Administration - Tribal Governance program at The Evergreen State College.

John McCoy served in the United States Air Force and in federal govenment before coming home to become the Business Manager for the Tulalip Tribes.  In 2003, he was elected to the Washington State House of Representatives, moving to the state Senate in 2013.  In the legislature, he was a friend to Evergreen, helping to ensure funding for the House of Welcome, Native Pathways, and the MPA Tribal Governance programs.  He taught in the MPA Tribal Governance program as an adjunct member of the faculty.  In 2020, Senator McCoy was bestowed an honorary Masters of Public Administration degree from Evergreen.
