Making Time for a Vintage Valentine’s Day

You guys, isn’t it hard to believe Valentine’s Day is coming up so fast? I feel like we were just putting away our Christmas decorations!

Life can definitely get demanding if we don’t make and take the time to slow down and enjoy the big things and the little things along the way, you know?

I was reminded this past weekend just how easy it is to be a valentine to the people that are around us all year long.

Don’t get me wrong, our weekend was not extravagant at all.  We didn’t go on a big trip, spend lots of money or dine at fancy restaurants.

Still, I can honestly say, our weekend felt extravagant.

Do you want to know why?

Our weekend felt extravagant because we intentionally carved out time to do all the things that were important to us.

We ate dinner and lingered over dessert with friends, hung out with family, worked on a project for the house, organized the upcoming week, caught up on laundry, napped and even took time to spend a few hours at the book store.

All those activities were so simple – and yet – they felt like a luxury because we made them a priority.

Our Latest Finds from Renningers

A few weeks ago, my mom and I celebrated our birthdays at an outdoor antique extravaganza, and we had the best time!

The event is several hours from our home, so we know the minute we walk out the door and get into the car, we’re committed for the entire day.

This means we can take our time driving, eating and treasure hunting at the hundreds of indoor and outdoor vendors spaces which feels like a fabulous gift in itself.

Of course, we don’t really need anything. But it’s always fun to look and honestly, you never really know what you’re going to find there.

Creating a Vintage Valentine’s Day Tablescape

The minute I found these old watch faces, I knew I wanted to use them on our vintage Valentine’s Day tablescape.

We don’t do a lot of decorating around the house for Valentine’s Day.  But we always make it a point to make breakfast and dinner feel special in the days leading up to Valentine’s Day.

I’ve had this set of Haviland china for years.  In fact, it’s one of the first sets my Mom ever gave me.

I don’t see a lot of this pattern anymore so I try to find other pieces I can mix and match with it.  Those dainty flowers get me every time.

I picked up this creamy coverlet turned table runner up at a charity shop last year for a few dollars.

The detailing on it was too pretty not to use on our vintage Valentine’s Day tablescape.

In that same thread, I also made these vintage monogrammed no sew pillows last year.  We use them all over the house in multiple rooms because they’re so neutral.

Most of the time, you can find vintage handkerchiefs like these at antique malls, charity shops, and thrift stores.

I will say though, several of the vendors told us vintage linens in general were getting harder and harder to find, especially the monogrammed ones.

We usually see plenty of vendors selling authentic and antique crocks at the extravaganza. But we’ve been painting so many rooms lately.

So, I decided to try and make my own. You can get all the details on how to create crock inspired paint cans in this post if you want to make some too. They are super easy!

Taking Time to Enjoy Every Season

One of my big goals for the year is to enjoy every season, no matter what it brings.

There have been so many vibrant colored wreaths, flowers and branches in magazines and big box stores lately.

It’s always a fun reminder spring is on the way even though it may not look like it outside our windows right now.

And when the spring season comes there will likely be more demands on our time from soccer games to garden parties to feathering our nest.

So, while we have the time to slow down and intentionally carve out special moments to enjoy the simple things like snuggling up, gathering inspiration at our favorite winter flea markets, meeting friends for dinner and lingering over dessert, spending time with family, taking a trip to the book store, simplifying our homes and cultivating what matters most to us – we should take full advantage of the season.

And while we’re at it, we should consider creating a vintage Valentine’s Day where the people around us are loved so well, it encourages them to practice the spirit of Valentine’s Day every day of the year.
