Conditions of Appointment & Fellowship Timeline

The Americas Research Network announces its fellowship program to support innovative research on U.S.-Mexican Transnationalism and on U.S.-Mexican Transnational Communities in order to foster collaboration among U.S. and Mexican scholars. Research projects on any aspect of U.S.-Mexican Transnationalism and Transnational Communities will be considered, but the projects must focus on topics that have not been thoroughly explored and must contribute significantly to the advancement of relevant scholarship. Fellowships will be awarded to U.S. graduate students and scholars with doctorates to conduct up to eight weeks of research in Mexico. The program is funded by the U.S. Department of State Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs through a grant to the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC). Fellowship stipends are $4,000 for the fellowship period. Each fellow will also receive an allowance of $500 for research-related expenses, including travel within Mexico. Travel expenses between the United States and Mexico will be covered. Fellows will develop their project in collaboration with one of our Mexican member institutions:

Prior to applying for a fellowship, each applicant should establish contact with one or more faculty members, researchers, or other representatives of the proposed host institution to ensure that they agree to serve in this capacity during the fellowship period. The selected host institutions will integrate the fellows into their research activities and provide them with workspace, access to their library and computer facilities, and other logistical support.

Review Process

Applications will be evaluated according the following criteria:

• Originality of the proposed research
• Quality of conceptualization and presentation
• Significance of the proposed research for Transnationalism and Transnational Community studies
• Applicants ability to complete the proposed research, as indicated by their academic records and other accomplishments

A panel of specialists in U.S-Mexican relations, drawn from the membership of ARENET Transnationalism Advisory Board, will review the applications and select the recipients of the fellowships, in consultation with other members of this advisory board and representatives from the designated host institutions.

Conditions of Appointment

1. Recipients of ARENET’s Transnationalism Fellowships must be in Mexico at least two weeks during the fellowship period.
2. Fellows must submit a final report, including an evaluation of the fellowship program.
3. Fellows must present the results of their research projects at a forum on transnationalism (date and site to be determined).
4. Fellows are responsible for securing the required permits to conduct research in Mexico. ARENET must receive a copy of these permits before awarding any fellowship funds.
5. ARENET is unable to provide health or other insurance to its fellows. Fellows must supply ARENET with proof of health insurance prior to beginning their research in Mexico.
6. ARENET cannot provide funds for the travel or living expenses of dependents.
7. All funds provided through ARENET’s Transnationalism Fellowship Program, including stipends and research or travel allowances, are subject to tax. ARENET does not advise fellows on tax questions concerning these funds.
8. ARENET`s Transnationalism Fellows may not simultaneously hold other major federally funded fellowships. Fellows who receive additional federal awards must contact ARENET immediately to discuss possible stipend adjustments.
9. If for any reason fellows are unable to complete their fellowship, they must return unused funds to ARENET. The amount of funds to be returned will be determined according to the percentage of the fellowship period completed and the total research-related expenses incurred by the date of termination. Fellows should maintain receipts or comparable documentation of all research-related expenses to submit to ARENET upon request.
10. Applications received after the deadline or incomplete applications will not be considered.
