Listen: How One Carniceria Is Building for Family & Community

In Rocky Ford, Colorado, a meat market isn’t “just” a meat market. Maya’s Carniceria is helping address the unique needs of a small, rural town, as well as creating an opportunity for young people to stay local. Hear how Maya and her family launched Rocky Ford’s first carniceria.

"It's the first meat market in Rocky Ford... it's been considered a food desert."

Maya Rivera, Co-Founder of Maya’s Carniceria

Maya’s Carniceria is the first of its kind in Rocky Ford, CO

Maya’s Carniceria was launched in August 2022 after being awarded $50,000 in pre-seed capital at the Greater Colorado Pitch Series, sponsored by the First Southwest Community Fund. Maya’s Carniceria addresses numerous community needs in Rocky Ford, including: access to fresh, local meat, a money transfer for migrant workers on the local farms, and Spanish to English translation services. The family run business is quickly becoming a spot for easy take-out and rolled ice cream.
