Support small businesses + People in need at the same time

The COVID-19 pandemic hit our communities hard in March of 2020 through the start of 2022. Hospitals were overwhelmed and shelters struggle to meet the new demand of those who were left unemployed. At the same time, small businesses struggled to stay open. With our Pizza Vs: Pandemic campaign, the nation came together and supported both.

Since we launched on March 21, 2020 we’ve received huge support from The Today Show, Rachael Ray, The New York Times, CNBC, and lots more.

WE DELIVERED PIZZA NATIONWIDE

We worked through almost 1,000 requests. This map shows the hospitals, clinics, and assorted care centers we’ve served.

What’s Next for Slice Out Hunger?

Our efforts these past two years have been focused on supporting this nation's healthcare workers as they've faced challenges of monstrous proportions. Though we're certainly not out of the woods, we'd like to refocus our efforts to the nation's food insecure, an already vulnerable population that has been deeply impacted and inflated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

We’ve transitioned our efforts toward our Pie It Forward project. We’ll be delivering hot delicious pizza to soup kitchens, shelters, free meal programs, and other hunger action centers all over the country on an ongoing basis.

Similar to Pizza Vs. Pandemic, it will have the added benefit of supporting locally-owned pizzerias and introducing them to local hunger-relief organizations that they can continue to work with long after our involvement.

We’d love for you to continue to support us with our Pie it Forward project to help with the lasting impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.

How Pizza Vs: Pandemic Worked

  1. Make a donation

Your tax deductible contribution will be added to thousands of other’s and used to fund pizza orders where care workers need it the most.

  2. We identify the need

Using news reports and your suggestions, we look for care workers with the greatest need. We then coordinate their delivery, including a pledge to follow strict safety protocols.

  3. Slice matches a local pizzeria

Our partners at Slice find a nearby pizzeria and ensure that they can accommodate the care center’s needs. We then place the order using donations we’ve collected. All additional fees have been waived for orders placed through Slice.

The Pizza Vs Pandemic campaign is our collaboration with Pizza to the Polls and Slice.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is behind this program? Pizza vs. Pandemic is a collaboration between Slice Out Hunger, Slice, and Pizza to the Polls. As a 501(c)3 organization, Slice Out Hunger is receiving all of the contributions, but each organization is playing a critical role in making this program happen.

Who does this benefit? The pizzas will be sent to care centers — hospitals, clinics, shelters, etc. — that are in real need during this difficult time. Funded by your donations, these pizza orders will also provide much needed revenue to the small businesses serving food to communities nationwide.

Does a donor need to cover the full price of a pizza for it to be delivered? No. We take donations of any size. Your donation will be pooled with everyone else’s and used to order whatever amount of food is necessary.

Will Pizza vs. Pandemic wait until donations meet a certain threshold, then coordinate a delivery? No waiting. We’re already getting orders out to the care workers who need our help now.

Will deliveries be coordinated for single pies, or large drop-offs? Both. When we’re informed about a care center in need, we reach out to confirm how much food is needed and the best way to safely deliver it.

Are delivery drivers following health and safety protocols to limit the spread of COVID-19?
Yes. Before placing orders with pizzerias, we confirm that they are following the most recent best practices for food handling and delivery. We also work with both the care center and pizzeria to determine the safest means of delivery, including curb-side drop-off.

Who is coordinating the requests on behalf of the care centers ? Volunteers with Slice Out Hunger communicate with care centers, the team at Slice work with the pizzerias.

How is the partnership being promoted? This program is being communicated through social media, email marketing, press, and word of mouth. Additional avenues are constantly being evaluated.
