WELCOME

PISG was founded by members of the Bloustein School in New Brunswick, NJ.

Who Are WE?

The Public Informatics Student Group (PISG) is an interdisciplinary organization for students interested in topics that bridge the gaps between information technology and public service.  Founded in 2019, the organization is open to undergraduate and graduate students with an interest in discovering how governments, education, healthcare, and social services are learning to be more agile in the age of Big Data, Artificial Intelligence, and the Internet of Things.

PISG is based out of the Bloustein School for Planning and Public Policy, part of Rutgers University, and is located in downtown New Brunswick, New Jersey. PISG is a recognized student organization (RSO) of the Graduate Student Association (GSA) and the group is open to all undergraduate and graduate students of the university.

What Do We Do?

PISG creates exploration within the student body by applying and using information, computing technology, and data in the contexts of public service and the urban environment.

One of our biggest goals is to facilitate the spread of new ideas around information and the public environment.  Our members come with backgrounds in paralympic sports, energy policy, transportation planning, geospatial information systems and more!  In all of these fields data and technology are playing an increasingly more important role.  PISG serves as a way to discuss the challenges and innovations of each field in order to find new ways of studying the interactions of people and technology in the social/ political environment.

What ELSE have we been up to?

We are constantly working both online and in our community to learn and further the understanding of how technology is changing the future of government.  In 2019 we hosted the inaugural Leaders Panel which attracted students from three schools and speakers from the university, state government, and the private sector.  Whether your interest topic is ride sharing in China, biases in AI, or the risks and benefits to open government data our students are involved somewhere.
