Ed's work is aimed at reimagining civil society in the Global South by looking beyond grant revenue for NGOs, exploring new organizational forms and alternative resource models. He founded PILnet: The Global Network for Public Interest Law in 1997 to develop global resources and networks in support of local human rights advocacy around the world, serving as President & CEO until 2015. He was also a member of the adjunct faculty of Columbia Law School for 21 years and a visiting professor of law at Cardozo Law School and Central European University. Ed has helped create innovative human rights initiatives in China, and in over 30 other countries in Europe, Asia and Africa, including while living in Romania and Hungary for ten years. He received the American Bar Association’s International Human Rights Award in 2009, and was a co-founder of the International Human Rights Watch Film Festival.
