This year's Doors Open Richmond is moving online due to COVID-19.

The 13th annual Doors Open Richmond event is moving online this year to give residents an opportunity to connect in a time of physical distancing and social isolation.

Through the annual event, locals and visitors are invited into arts, culture, civic and heritage sites around Richmond to learn more about the city.

Starting Saturday, June 6, residents can take a peek behind the scenes at more than 30 sites in Richmond via their phones, tablets or computers presented by the Richmond Museum Society and the City of Richmond.

Each of the sites – ranging from places of worship, cultural and civic centres, ethnic and local business, as well as museums and heritage sites – represents Richmond’s cultural diversity and raises civic awareness.

Due to its digital nature, the event has expanded its event days so that each site is able to “participate meaningfully,” according to the Doors Open website, which adds that organizers “fully intend to return as an in-person event in 2021.”

The event will run until June 13.

Half of this year’s sites are new to Doors Open, according to the city, including Gateway Theatre, Richmond RCMP, Yuu Japanese Tapas, Lamajoun Armenian Restaurant, Scotch Pond and Lulu Island Winery.

Frontline workers at BC Emergency Health Services Station 269 will also be featured, along with interviews at Richmond East Catholic Church and a tour of the council chambers at Richmond City Hall.

Every day between June 6 and June 13, new videos and behind-the-scenes footage will be posted to the Richmond Museum’s Facebook, Twitter and Instagram pages. The online content can be accessed by following the Richmond Museum and by searching the hashtag #DoorsOpenOnline.

A full listing of Doors Open 2020 activities can be found on the event’s website.
