Discovery+ will start streaming the true crime docuseries American Cartel, produced by The Content Group’s Breaklight Pictures, this month.

The three-part docuseries (pictured) delves into the race to find the killer of officer Matthew Pavelka, who died in a Burbank hotel parking lot in 2003, an incident that left his fellow policeman, officer Gregory Campbell, critically injured.

The investigation led local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies to a gang that brought the drugs and violence of the Mexican cartels to American suburbs, and exposes how Mexican cartels were already deeply entrenched in the U.S.

American Cartel uses commentary from the law enforcement members who worked to bring Pavelka’s killer to justice, including Ret. Det. Campbell who survived the incident.

The series also showcases U.S. marshals and various representatives from the LAPD including members from its Gang Unit, SWAT, Special Operations and Major Crimes Unit. Added to the mix is an ex-“Mexican Mafia” gang member in silhouette and disguised as “Mundo” who provides insight into the inner-workings of the gangs and their ties to the Mexican cartels.

The docuseries will begin streaming on March 30.

American Cartel is produced by Breaklight Pictures, part of The Content Group (TCG). Executive producers include Dan Johnstone, Derek Owen, Jeff Daniels, Steve Michaels, and Jodi Flynn. Pamela Deutsch is executive producer for Discovery+.

In other Discovery news, OWN has greenlit a new unscripted series, Young & Gospel.

The series will follow the lives of four young gospel artists as they pursue their dreams and live life on their own terms while staying true to their faith and their families. The series stars singers Koryn Hawthorne, Bri Babineaux, Jekalyn Carr and Christian rapper Wande.

“The new series Young & Gospel, will be a perfect addition to our growing roster,” said Tina Perry, president of OWN, who made the announcement.

Young & Gospel is produced by Thinkfactory Media, an ITV America company. Adam Reed, Adam Freeman, Jordana Hochman, Phil Thornton and Jen McClure-Metz are executive producers.
