Brief Bio:
Professor Karem's research and teaching focus on twentieth-century American literature, with an emphasis on regional and ethnic literatures throughout the American hemisphere.  His scholarship encompasses Southern literature, African American literature, Latino literature, Native American literature, and literatures of the Caribbean and Latin America.  He is particularly interested in questions of author and audience, editing, publishing and reception history, as well as the changing canon of what we consider American literature.   His scholarship aims to expand our understanding of American literature beyond the U.S., reaching across the national borders that have traditionally defined the field.  Because Professor Karem believes that America's multicultural heritage is the source of our literary and cultural strength, he is especially grateful to teach in the richly diverse community of Cleveland.
