In a brand new blog, our Vice President of Impact, Saeed Uri, reflects on the key challenges and opportunities in implementing #SustainableDevelopment programs in fragile and conflict-affected settings. 🤝🌎 Drawing on more than a decade of experience, most recently on the USAID - Office of Transition Initiatives (OTI) #Iraq Regional Program, Saeed uses real-world examples to illustrate why it's crucial for projects to leverage #RapidDataAnalysis to inform decision-making processes and swiftly adapt their programming. By ethically integrating new and emerging technologies, he explains how sustainable development practitioners can maximize impact in communities facing #FoodInsecurity, climate-related risks, and rising social tensions. #DevelopmentWorksHere because great people work here! 👏 Meet Saeed Uri: https://ow.ly/QPgI50RGThk

At Chemonics, In March, we launched an innovative program to build a pipeline of local project leaders. The 6-week course focused on building the soft and hard skills valuable to a Chief of Party, and included mentorship, coaching, and peer to peer learning. 🌟 Congratulations to the 29 graduates of the 2024 cohort representing 21 countries. 🌟 #ProfessionalDevelopment #LocallyLedDevelopment #DevelopmentWorksHere

This is the second year I have had the distinct honor to be invited by the amazing Maegan Shanks to present on inclusive development at Gallaudet University’s International Development M.A. Program. This cohort asked thought-provoking questions, and proposed innovative solutions to some complex, persistent challenges. Experiences like this remind me that the next generation is prepared to make the world a more inclusive, equitable, accepting, and a happier place to be. 🤟🏼 Chemonics International #inclusivedevelopment #GESI

“The private sector is a key ally in improving the reach of health services, especially in underserved areas." - Michelle M. Lang-Alli, Health Office Director at USAID/India. We’re thrilled to share this new recording from the 2024 Society for International Development, United States (SID-US) Annual Conference, where we had the chance to connect with hundreds of development practitioners for our session, “Harnessing the Power of Systems Thinking to Accelerate Local Health Markets.” It is undeniable that tackling the complex challenges of today’s healthcare landscape requires a deep understanding of the actors involved, and how they interact with one another. But what does this look like in practice? Our panel, including USAID/India's Michelle M. Lang-Alli, Frontier Health Markets (FHM) Engage's Dana Tilson and Dr Amit Bhanot, HEALTH SYSTEMS CONSULT LIMITED (HSCL)’s Oluwatosin Kolade, and Zuri Health's Titilola Olaolu-Hassan, shared innovative, practical lessons learned for effectively applying a #SystemsThinking approach to healthcare markets around the world. #SparksOfHope Watch the recording: https://ow.ly/ZQhn50REk4E

We're proud to partner with the #Zambia Medicines and Medical Supply Agency (ZAMMSA) to support critical health #SupplyChain programming! ZAMMSA is a key government partner and a critical public health #SupplyChain actor, and we're working with them through USAID PASCO to create innovative solutions to meet the needs of a growing population and to manage the unprecedented demand for #health products, including providing comprehensive technical assistance to strengthen Zambia’s national supply chain systems. 🤝
In March, USAID PASCO met with Nayoto Kanyimba, the ZAMMSA Mongu Hub Manager, to discuss the impact of last-mile third-party (3PL) support in Western province. Here's what she shared: “Without USAID PASCO third-party (3PL) support, last-mile distribution would undoubtedly face significant challenges. The resources and expertise provided by USAID PASCO have been instrumental in overcoming logistical barriers and ensuring that essential health commodities reach those who need them most. This is particularly crucial in remote areas where access is limited," emphasized Nayoto Kanyimba, ZAMMSA Mongu Hub Manager. USAID/Zambia

In Mosul, #Iraq, it's rare for women to venture into woodworking. However, in this photo by Ibrahim Sherkhan, Almaz Yaseen defies the odds. 💪 In the next installment of our #PhotoFridays series, we're honoring Almaz, who received a grant from the USAID DCEO/Tahfeez Project to support her woodworking business and improve the livelihood and safety of her family. Despite facing criticism in this male-dominated field, Almaz persisted and became Mosul’s first female carpentry workshop owner. #DevelopmentWorksHere

In an era where conflict transcends borders and intertwines with economic activities, understanding the intricate links between commerce, political instability, and a changing climate is critical for an understanding of the root causes of #FoodInsecurity. A new XCEPT research paper, supported by Chemonics UK and the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office, explores how the once-local sesame trade has become both a catalyst and casualty of conflict in #Ethiopia and #Sudan. The competition for sesame revenues has not only reshaped agricultural markets, but also fueled violence and political instability, destabilizing once-reliable food sources. Now more than ever, it's critical that #SustainableDevelopment practitioners are able to leverage research and #RapidDataAnalysis to recognize when a cycle of conflict is putting a population at risk of food insecurity and famine. Yesterday, we had the privilege of bringing together #RuleOfLaw experts and #SustainableDevelopment practitioners for "Forging Justice in Fragile Contexts," an open forum to discuss how #democracy and #governance programming can contribute to a more peaceful, just world! After opening remarks from Melissa Gasmi, our first panel on “Leading Locally with People-Centered Justice” featured insights from esteemed panelists Themba Mahleka, Tiernan Mennen, Cecilia Barraza Morelle, and Miranda Jolicoeur, alongside moderator Kelly Brooks. Discussions centered around the importance of remaining flexible in fragile and conflict-affected states, as well as ensuring that informal justice systems are effectively integrated alongside legal institutions to foster trust and put the needs of the community first. Attendees had an opportunity to network and connect with peers before our second panel, “Navigating Rule of Law in Transitioning Countries,” which was moderated by Mario Kerby and highlighted the voices of Don Chisholm, Sitan CISSE Togo, Jacques Miguel SANON, and Samuel Bong Ngambo. Panelists explored the adaptation of systems established under colonial rule, the threat that misinformation plays in destabilizing legal frameworks, and how community-based conflict resolution can inform project priorities. Closing remarks from Rebecca Brewington rounded out the interactive, half-day discussion as she highlighted the importance of empathy in promoting justice within fragile and conflict-affected settings. Thank you to our panelists and all our attendees for gathering for this inspirational event! Learn more about our work in democracy and governance: https://ow.ly/FH2n50RAfOZ
