On Thursday May 16, 1929, the Hollywood Roosevelt hosted the very first Academy Awards. The event was held a full three months after the winners had already been announced and honored movies released from August 1, 1927 - August 1, 1928. The Hollywood Roosevelt’s Blossom Ballroom was set up with 36 banquet tables, adorned with candles and candy replicas of the now iconic Academy statuette, designed in 1928 by MGM’s art director Cedric Gibbons. 270 guests were in attendance including Charlie Chaplin, Cecil B. DeMille, and Mary Pickford. The event was more of a dinner party than an awards ceremony, with the actual presentation of awards, presided over by Academy president Douglas Fairbanks, lasting only 15 minutes. The Hollywood Roosevelt served their guests a delicious meal, with entrée options including filet of sole sauté au beurre (sole sautéed in butter) and half broiled chicken on toast. Today, The Hollywood Roosevelt continues to honor their Oscars history, organizing viewing parties of the awards and special menus for guests to enjoy.
