In December of 2008, the University of Portland completed its purchase of the Triangle Park property on the Willamette River waterfront with plans to transform it into a new 35-acre expansion of the main campus. Plans for the campus included two additional soccer practice and intramural lighted fields, a tennis center, a track and field facility, a rowing center and dock, a new physical plant building, and additional campus parking.
The University officially renamed the area the Franz Campus during the spring of 2018, in honor of the late Robert Franz. It was a lead gift from the Franz Estate that allowed UP to move forward with the development of the new academic, sports, and utilities complex.
In the summer of 2018, the Portland soccer programs christened the two new soccer fields, as the University completed that project well in advance of the original target date. The University also completed the construction of a new physical plant building and finished construction on the new boathouse in 2023.
