Norma Rae 1979
Before her Oscar willing performance here, Sally Field was a flying nun on TV and starred in a movie about smuggling 400 cases of Coors beer. So, this was a step up. Anyway, join the boys for our latest installment of Union movies month.

209 The Devil and Miss Jones 1941
We kick off union movie month (in March, get it?) with this chestnut from the forties picked by our Patreons. This comedy, about a boss spying on workers who want to form a union, was a box office hit back in its day. How does it hold up over eighty years later?

208 Hot Tub Time Machine 2010
Four guys in 2010 go back in time to the 1980s and do almost exactly the sort of humor you got out of many 1980s comedies. Now two guys in 2024 go back to 2010 and judge them for it.

Remember Shelley Long? No? How about Bette Midler? She’s still working isn’t she? Well, Midler and Long did a movie together and a non AI George Carlin was also in it and the boys are gonna discuss.

Customer Reviews
Progressive, Supportive, Informative & Affirming
I listen to this when I need zero stress. It’s light entertainment I can enjoy. But there is something deeper going on at the same time. These guys are very socially progressive and the older movies they review serve as a vehicle for astute social commentary without being emotionally heavy. It’s the unexpected back door to the enlightened view and for that reason, I wish more people were listening. Their commentary is supportive, informative and affirming. Bonus that Joe does a bit of a history review from the time the movie was released (more commentary opportunities). And the guest stars are really fun. Does This Still Work works because it identifies and names social patterns, relationship norms, ideas and ways of relating and often provides a sorely needed update without ever feeling like a lecture because they talk about movies!

This podcast is always my go-to, whenever I’m thinking of current movie trends against the films of the past. Plus their guest stars bring great charisma and insight to the discussions!! Really just love the guest stars.
Unbalanced, but still kinda fair
I was turned on to this podcast because a few of my other favorite podcasters have been on as guests. I listened to their shows and chuckled a bit, and the listened to a few more due to auto play and being out of other podcasts. Not going to lie…very fair to middling podcast. While it doesn’t follow the “two white guys yammering” stereotype, it’s not far off. As far as I can tell neither host has any qualification to talk about film, and seem, quite often to miss the point. This is especially true around sci-if and movies made as reflections of their time. I found myself yelling “your missing the point” more that once In just about every episode I listened to! (Blade runner, apocalypse now, clue, clueless and Paton)
