Hasbro has scrapped its plans to make Cara Dune action figures after “The Mandalorian” actress Gina Carano was fired last week over her controversial social media posts, according to a new report.
Retailer BigBadToyStore revealed Monday that it was forced to cancel preorders of Cara Dune toys because no more would be made.
“The ‘Star Wars’ Black [Series] Cara Dune figure was released in 2020 and sold out not long after the inventory was received,” a spokeswoman for BigBadToyStore told The Hollywood Reporter in a Monday email. “Hasbro planned for another production run and we were accepting preorders from that production run. Due to recent events, Hasbro was no longer approved to produce any more of this figure.”
Hasbro did not return requests seeking comment.
The former mixed martial arts fighter-turned-actress was fired last Tuesday from “The Mandalorian” and all other Star Wars projects after she posted “an offensive social media post,” a rep from Lucasfilm confirmed.
The post included an image from Nazi Germany of a child with a stick chasing a Jewish woman who was stripped down to her underwear. Carano compared the image to today’s overheated political climate.
“Jews were beaten in the streets, not by Nazi soldiers but by their neighbors…. even by children,” Carano wrote next to the image.
The Lucasfilm rep added that “denigrating people based on their cultural and religious identities are abhorrent and unacceptable.” It was not Carano’s first controversial post. Carano was also dropped as a client by UTA that same evening.
The decision polarized Star Wars fans and talking heads alike. Some applauded the action while others expressed outrage, even starting a petition on Change.org to bring Carano back to the hit Disney+ series.
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) was among those who expressed ire over her firing. UFC president Dana White also weighed in on the controversy swirling around his former fighter, showing support for her, while ESPN’s UFC reporter Ariel Helwani, who is Jewish, expressed his disappointment.
“As a Jewish person, and as a human being, it just doesn’t sit well,” Helwani said. “And I wish she would have never posted that. And quite frankly I wish someone would have talked to her about her social media posts over the past year. Some of them not even political. Just in general, they felt off to me. I am sorry she has gone down this path.”
“Leave her alone. We make mistakes, we all make mistakes,” White said. “For everybody to go in on her … I love how Ariel Helwani made it all about him, such a douche.”
Carano has shown no contrition after her firing was made public. Instead, on Friday, she called herself a victim of cancel culture and said she would be teaming up with the Daily Wire, the conservative website run by Ben Shapiro, to develop and produce a movie project.
“I am sending out a direct message of hope to everyone living in fear of cancellation by the totalitarian mob,” she wrote on Twitter Friday. “I have only just begun using my voice which is now freer than ever before, and I hope it inspires others to do the same. They can’t cancel us if we don’t let them.”
