This past weekend the Near West Side saw the reopening of the Vliet Street Oasis Market. Utilizing what used to be a vacant lot on the Vliet Street corridor located at the corner of 38th and Vliet, the market serves as a vital destination for fresh produce in an area that would otherwise be a food desert. This year the market will see a wide array of vendors, who all specialize in different foods and goodies. In addition to fresh, seasonal produce farmers, the market has a donut vendor, a Bundt cake vendor, and a gift basket vendor.

One of these unique bakers is April Bonds of AP Treats, who will be at the market on Fridays and Saturdays. At her stand on Friday were numerous tasty treats including strawberry shortcakes, toffee grapes, and an assortment of cookies and brownies.

If you arrive to the market on a particularly hot day this summer and you feel worried about dehydration, don’t worry. Just across the street on the other side of 38th you can find Pete’s Pops, a local favorite that always boasts an impressive variety of popsicle flavors. Perfect for a summer day underneath the sun, these delicious popsicles can be enjoyed at the market on one of the various tables set up where you can relax and enjoy the various festivities the Vliet Street Oasis has planned throughout the summer.
