Arianna String Quartet to perform Saturday concert to start Quincy Civic Music Association season

QUINCY — The Quincy Civic Music Association will launch its 2022-23 season with a concert by the Arianna String Quartet at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 24, at St. John’s Anglican Parish, Seventh and Hampshire.

The quartet is comprised of John Mc Grosso, violin; Julia Sakharova, violin; Joanna Mendoza, viola; and Kurt Baldwin, cello. Praised for “emotional commitment and fluent virtuosity,” this is one of the most accomplished American string quartets. They are headquartered at the University of Missouri-St. Louis, where they teach.

The quartet has appeared throughout North America, South America, Europe and Asia with frequent visits to Brazil and South Africa. They are heard weekly on NPR and have a number of long-term recording contracts. They have collaborated with many of the world’s finest musicians.

The quartet also hold a clinic for student string players from 1-2:30 p.m. on Saturday at Baldwin Auditorium as part of the Quincy Public School music program’s String Fest. The clinic is supported by a grant from the Quincy Public School Foundation.

The second concert of the season will be the Seraph Brass Quintet, an all-women ensemble, on Feb. 18, 2023, at Salem Evangelical Church. The third concert will be by Guitarra Azul on March 24, 2023 at State Street Theater. The season will conclude with a concert co-sponsored by the Great River Heritage Chapter of the American Guild of Organists. Scott Montgomery will perform on the renovated and enlarged organ at St. John’s Cathedral on Payson Road on April 28, 2023.

Season tickets ($80) and single admission tickets ($25) will be available to at concert doors and County Market and Hy-Vee stores in Quincy. Students through high school are admitted free, as are college students from JWCC, C-SC and QU.
