What is Mound House?

Mound House’s mission is to preserve, share, and interpret 2,000 years of cultural and environmental history of Fort Myers Beach and Southwest Florida. We are honored to be the Town of Fort Myers Beach’s museum tasked with interpreting and preserving our island’s rich history from the Calusa, Spanish Seminole, Anglo-American Pioneers, and the many others who all have lived or visited this unique island in Southwest Florida. 

Museum

Our six exhibit museum details nearly 2,000 years of cultural and environmental history of our site. Home to three distinct cultures including Calusa, Spanish Seminole, and Anglo-Americans; our site reflects the many layers of Southwest Florida's history!

Kayak Tours

Experience the natural beauty of Estero Bay while exploring tidal creeks and winding mangrove tunnels like only a kayaker can. We often see a wide variety of wading birds that you can only see in Florida, and sometimes dolphins and manatees!

Guided Tours

No matter your group size, our tour guides will lead you through an educational and entertaining experience that you’ll never forget. With hands-on replica artifacts, and atlatl throwing, our tours are great for all ages.

Underground Exhibit

Step underground into a nearly 2,000 year old Calusa shell mound with our Stories Beneath Our Feet Exhibit. See the layers of millions of shells the make up the ancient engineering of the Calusa built Shell Mound!

Kayak Tours

Our popular kayak tours are the best way to experience the wild beauty of Estero Bay. Our guides will take you through a maze of mangroves where we have seen herons, rosette spoonbills, dolphins, and manatees. Guides will also point out archaeological sites of the Calusa people and discuss how this native people flourished in Southwest Florida. 

The Mound House Book

What to learn about the Mound House from comfort of your home? Have guests visiting you who want to know about the area? Then The Mound House book is a great idea for you!  All proceeds support the Friends of the Mound House non-profit that supports the Mound House.

Friends of the Mound House

The Friends started as an ad hoc organization of volunteers that served as Mound House docents, the Friends incorporated in 2005 as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Since the founding, the Friends have raised funds to support Mound House programs and created an endowment to generate a continuous source of income to support the Mound House.
