The Association alleges At anthem Blue Cross is violating patient protection laws by delaying access to care. Cal matters health reporter Christian Wang has that story. Anthem is the second largest insurer in the state, representing more than 6 million patients a survey conducted by the California hospital Association found that patients a good portion of whom are insured by anthem spend an extra two weeks on average in the hospital because of insurance delays, according to the lawsuit filed in LA County Superior court these delays can jeopardize patients' recovery for example a stroke patient may be ready to leave the hospital to recover in a nursing home, but get stuck waiting in the hospital while anthem works on the claim, the lawsuit says the delays can also create bottlenecks in emergency rooms by blocking beds needed for new patients under state law, hospitals cannot discharge patients without approval from their insurer this is supposed to make sure patients get the care they need. A spokesperson for anthems of the company did not have an immediate response and would be investigating the allegations cal matters Christian wall I'm chairing Glazer with KCRW news ...
