Four Panthers Honored As Prestigious Lubar 25 Recipients

Four of just 25 overall to earn honor at UWM

MILWAUKEE, Wis. – Four student-athletes from the Milwaukee Athletic Department have been recognized as members of the 2021-22 Lubar 25, announced earlier this week by the University.

Riley Hansen of track & field/cross country, Taylor Hattori of women's soccer, Mayya Perova of women's tennis, and Lauren Spaulding from the volleyball team were all selected for the honor, which identifies business students dedicated to academic success, entrepreneurship, volunteering, and campus involvement at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

To be recognized, students must be an undergraduate business student with a junior or senior standing and have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.00. Additionally, students must have not been recognized by the Lubar 25 in a previous year.

Along with being one of the top 800-meter runners for Milwaukee's track & field team, Hansen was a member of the women's cross country team that won its second consecutive Horizon League title in the fall. During the indoor track season, Hansen recorded a first-place finish in the 800-meter at the Tierney Classic and helped the Panthers finish runner-up at the Horizon League Championships. A team leader with a near-perfect GPA, she was also one of the first members of UWM's "Green Bandana Project", helping advocate for mental health support within the department.

Hattori is a four-year member of the soccer program, having appeared in 67 games while making 47 starts. She has recorded 29 career points on 10 goals and nine assists, earning Horizon League postseason honors as both a sophomore (First Team) and junior (Second Team). She finished with nine points on two goals and a career-high five assists this past fall, with her assist total ranking tied for seventh in the Horizon League. She scored one of the biggest goals of the season, accounting for the only score of the contest as the Panthers topped No. 14 Xavier, 1-0, in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

Perova had a stellar senior season on the court, capping off her career with All-Horizon First Team accolades and a 19-5 overall record. The Moscow native held a 10-match win streak at one point in the season and helped the Milwaukee Panthers to a runner-up finish in the 2022 Horizon League Tennis Championships.

Spaulding just wrapped up her four-year career with the Panthers volleyball team and proved to be a leader on and off the court. She's been the heart and soul of Milwaukee volleyball since stepping on campus as a walk-on in 2018. On the court, Spaulding totaled over 200 digs and 20 service aces. It was off the court where she shined even more. In 2020, Spaulding was awarded the Highest Female Student-Athlete GPA thanks to a 4.0 that year. At the 2022 Golden Panthers, Spaulding was honored as a prestigious James Wright Award recipient thanks to her commitment to teamwork, leadership, and communication.
